40 psi on stock HY35?

You read that right. I pushed 40 psi. out of that little turbo tonight. I've noticed that since I got the truck back, I have been seeing more boost than I used to. I can hit 35 without trying and usually spike at 37. Could it be because I have such low FP that the engine is having to put that much of a load on itself to acclerate? Dad get's his car back tomorrow (second gear synchros gone at 5300) so Mon. I'm taking mine in.

The only way you can get that kind of boost is from adding fuel. I would think that low FP would decrease you chance to reach boost level like that.

Smoke Dog is right. Its takes more fuel to make more boost. It will be interesting to see how long that HY35 lasts while producing that much boost.

You might want to put some Kevlar around that turbo.

you are way outside the efficency map, you are actually heating the air

not good

My HY35 was pushing 32 psi for a while. When I changed it I found a nice crack in the exhaust housing around the wastegate. I am sure I was over-speeding the turbo at this altitude.

Yeah. I would tune that boost down some. 40psi is too much for that turbo to be good. Cooler air from lower psi would be more beneficial. More around it's map.

Re:40 psi on stock HY35?

Alright. I'm gonna go and loosen the clamp on it. It was funny how before, when i had the pump wire hooked up and all I could barely hit 35. Now it's nothing. I haven't had it above 32 at WOT lately so maybe this was just a one time thing. The EGT's on my truck were at about 750. That was flooring it in OD at 90mph. My FP was about .6 . I'm taking it in Mon. I was just curious. Yes it is still the 9cm housing.

Your air density or number of actual oxygen molecules will be lower than if it were set at around 32 PSI.
40 PSI is in the efficiency range of closer to 50%. You actually loose HP at 40.

Don~

Re:40 psi on stock HY35?

What do you mean by that? I loosened the clamp and it now reads 30.

Its easier to replace the exhaust then clean it out..after that happens. And in some cases you blow parts and oil into your intercooler as well. I've only blown up one turbo (HX40) and it all went out the exhaust. I took the oprtunity to try a different exhaust system since I had to change my downpipe again anyhow.

Re:40 psi on stock HY35?

Ahhh. I see. Well, the truck is going BACK into the dealer for a new lift pump. Got 0.0 at WOT and about 8.4 at idle. Mom and Dad keep asking me how Iknow that it is dead. They said maybe that's normal. :
