Hey. I have a buddy looking at a 2001 cummins and i have a 92 first gen. Pretty familiar with the trucks and know that a certain few years of 2nd gens had little things that needed done like the alternator wire with tin foil. What other things are there to look for??

Tin foil on the alternator wire is fools gold. Most of the time overdrive shifting issues are caused by dirty ground wires (multiple), AC on the alternator output, or both. Tin foil is merely a band aid, and does not fix the underlying cause.

A few other thing come to mind. See if the lift pump is still on the engine block, or if the fuel system has been modified. That could reveal if the truck had any mods in the past or currently. There's also the possibility that Dodge installed the in tank lift pump, which was worse than the block mounted one it replaced.

Also see if the breather bottle is still located behind the radiator, or if it has been relocated. If it is still in the original spot, the radiator could be partially plugged with oily dirt and gunk.

A 2001 could have rear disc brakes or drums. Drums indicate that the truck was a early 2001, disc brakes were a mid-year model change. The disc brake 2001 trucks are typically referred to as 2001 and a halfs here on the forums.

Other 2nd gen issues that come to mind are mostly the truck itself, door rust/rot on the lower edge and cracked dashboards.
