2002 Doge Ram 3500 5.9 Cummins VP44 (273k miles) Crank but no start.

I installed a glow shift fuel pressure gauge on the bottom of my filter mounted on the side of the block. The guage said I was getting 8 pounds of fuel pressure (bad!) but the truck still ran. Today I re-did my primary battery cable clamps because they were Jimmy rigged and I could take them off with my hand, the truck started much faster but ran for about 40 seconds then died.... Did my lift pump pass away? I put the truck in the run position and pulled my fuel relay out and then I put it back in to try and prime it, my guage said their was 0 pounds of fuel pressure but the fuel solenoid's on the injection pump clicked so I know the relay is good (I think?) The truck didn't seem to lack power but I haven't been In any other 2nd gen to know. When I started the truck earlier it sounded like it had a baby lope to it but I didn't think much of it. I also noticed that their was a "aftermarket fuel pump" sticker on the front radiator mount beside the AC sticker kinda figured that since it has 270,000 miles.

Any recommendations help me being a first Cummins owner.
Thank you!

Cheap gauges mounted directly on the housing may be giving you a bad reading... Did you introduce any air into the line when fooling with that? Try cracking an injector line or two to bleed off any air.

Locate your aftermarket fuel pump and try to ID it and post up. It will either be mounted below and behind the filter housing-stock location, or somewhere between the filter housing and tank. It will look like a starter without the side gear with an inlet and outlet hose. If its an intank unit you won't find anything along the fuel path.

Also, try turning your key on/off 3 times and leave off. Watch odometer for codes and wait for P-done twice. It'll run ECU and PCU codes, write them down if you see any.....

PS don't EVER use a starting aid on a grid heater Cummins.

Sweet, save your money for some quality gauges and run the FP where you can see it at all times.....

Are glow shift gauges not high quality?

I just installed Isspro fuel pressure gauge and Autometer pyrometer and boost gauges today and all I did was use the plug on top of my filter head. My truck would not start either. I had to bleed my lines to get the truck to fire up.

i have the Airdog system mounted and showed 16 psi at idle and about 10.5 psi at full throttle. I bumped it up to 18.5 psi at Idle. I check full throttle tomorrow again. I showed a maximum of 17 psi for boost. I’m not sure what a stock set up should produce.
