2001 24 Valve 6 speed Fan Clutch temp to turn on.
My friend Forrest passed away and he had always been my go to guy for Diesel related questions.
The other day I was hauling a little ford 9n tractor with my 2001 24 valve dodge ram 6 speed and the dang EGT's where hitting 900 and 1000 easy where as for the past 10 years they would have only been 5 or 600.
The truck has a new fan clutch which only seems to work when the temps are 50 degrees or colder and not when towing or hauling. Makes no sense to me..
The other day while hauling the 9n the outside temps were about 87 degree F. I looked for boost leaks, Im not sure if the turbo needs to have a adjustment made or not, I have never really messed with the waste gate adjustment.
Anyone have any ideas on the fan clutch or the high EGT's?
Thanks

On my 2002, IIRC, the fan clutch kicks in when the water temp hits about 210. Only kicks in when I'm pulling the fifth wheel up a steep mountain pass. My EGTs can hit 900-1000 pretty easy when towing, if I hit a hill. If you have a boost gauge, you might check if the boost is lower than normal. Wouldn't hurt to check for boost leaks if boost is less than normal.

Totally normal, water temp and exhaust temp shouldn't be correlated. What was your water temp? Normal range? Towing conditions=hills, stop/go? Environment? Hot, Humid? Fill out your sig with mods for better answers...

I wouldn't worry about 900-1000 EGTs, especially on the pre-turbo side. The fan doesn't really care about EGTs until they stay high long enough to push your coolant temp up. And with those pusher fans on the front, they may have been putting enough air through to keep the temps down so that the primary fan wasn't needed.
What kind of boost numbers were you hitting? You should have been seeing some higher than normal numbers there since you were working it harder.
