Learn me on California version?
A buddy of mine just purchased a 99 24v cummins, but it's a california truck? I've seen the info on here before, but cant seem to find it in a search. The truck has some mods, but even with them does that mean the HP is lower than if it were a non Cali rig?
What parts would he need to remove to make it non-Calihere in TX?
Is the 99 24v a good engine? How does it compare to the 12v and the 5.9CR?
It also has Banks on it, and know from experience the Banks isn't the hot setup on the CR's, but how are they on the 24v?
Thanks....just learning on the 24v, never been in these waters!

It didn't come with a cat, just a muffler and resonator. I believe the Ca vehicles were inspected at the factory instead of randomly for Federal application. You should be ready to go. The autos are lower hp than the manuals.

There's no smog requirements on any of the 24v trucks and when replacing the VP, there is no CA specific VP44 models either, so how can there be any CA model trucks that make less HP?
The 12v engines and the 24v engines both have their pro's and con's compared to each other. Depends on what feature you like.

I understand that the 24v Cummins was clean enough to pass smog without the CAT.
You may want to check and see if it has a 53 block - mine did and cracked. Extended warm up may prevent a crack if it has one. Not all 99s had 53's

If I recall correctly when I had my 02', the only difference from the Cali version was programming of the computer. I could be wrong, but something in the back of my head remembers the dealer telling me that... could be the brain cells fighting that i'm feeling though.. and around that time, some came with cats and some didn't. My 02' had a cat, but my neighbors (at the time) didn't have a cat. Both trucks were 2002's and both bought around the same time. I just remember they both had resonators, but mine had a cat on it too.

I've never seen a 24v with a catalytic converter. Only the 12v's had those. 1998-2002 24v's had a muffler and a resonator. Cant remember if the '03's came out with the particulate filter or if it was later on.

The Ca versions are more sensitive to tranny upgrades and especially smart controllers when combined with an exhaust brake. My CEL light was hidden behind black electrical tape for five years.

I wish I was as fine, as those who work the pipeline!
The california version is capable of pointing out the deficiencies in every other states truck but incapable of focusing on it's own.
You will find that your truck tends to wander aimlessly, while being quick to direct others.
It will never perform successfully but will be quick to point out it's superiority over all other trucks from other areas of the country.
You will also never be able to diagnose a problem with a california version using logic, you will have to ensure you constantly caress the trucks aura, and be sure to never install feelings or talk towards it in a way that will hurt its self esteem.
On the good side you can be assured that any problem with the california version will never be the fault of your truck, but can be solved with increasing the fees and costs for more wealthy trucks.
