Hey all.
So I had my first dead pedal a few days ago. Started up, let warm up a few minutes, drove down the road a half mile to a stop sign, started to go from the stop and had little throttle. Not totally dead, but barely any acceleration. Pulled over and checked codes on cts and got 0216 fuel timing failure. Didn't clear it, but started driving again and it was fine. Got to work and cleared it. Code came again the next day but without any dead pedal. Lift pump is only a year old, fuel pressure never dropped below 15. New apps from Timbo last winter. Scared to death my vp is going. No cel just that code twice and dead pedal once.
Any thoughts? 98 k miles. Original vp as far as I know. Bought with 42 k miles.

 

Yes injection pump DEAD time for new one just went throught this whats happen the advance piston in the pump is siezed or on its way

its hard to accept but its vp time do it now on your terms

 

Nooooo! Man, I've done everything I can to keep it healthy. Delphi every tank, seldom change chip stages, ran out of fuel a few times back in the day when my gauge was bad. Typical.

 

Alright, I've takin a minute to evaluate.

My new questions are, where is the best place to get a stock s.o. vp from, and how hard is it to swap?
Fyi I have a few light mechanic buddy's, and I did pretty much everything on my truck except build the inside of my trans.

 

Sounds like a dying pump It's not too bad a job imo, just alot of stuff to pull to get to the VP44. Getting the injector lines off is the trickiest part. Running out of fuel is bad for a VP44 because the pump is cooled and lubed by the fuel. I was told by the shop I bought my rebuilt VP44 from that even running a low level of fuel in the tank is not good. Now they tell me.

 

I am experiencing the same thing. Is there a chance the VP isn't bad and the symptoms might clear with a new aftermarket lift pump? Or am I in for the big payout?...

 

its not that hard to change the VP..
find diesel dan youtube videos..

if you're not afraid to work on your truck..you won't have any problems.
just be ready to figure out how to adapt the instructions to the tools you have on hand..I had to make a gear puller...I just used parts that I had.
it worked.

if its not the VP..could it be the APPS?. since the fuel pressure was never low..doesn't sound like a fuel filter

Believe me, I was ****** when my fuel gauge was off, and I've been worried those few times running out of fuel might have damaged the vp. That was a year ago now so I hoped it was safe since time has passed. Fuel filter on the air dog is only 2 months old, and apps was just a year ago too.
I will for sure look up some videos, I'm pretty fearless about tearing into the truck now days. Thanks for the info guys, I'll start doin some research and shopping.

 

before you buy ask the shop or the rebuilders on the new vp your getting if you got a new electronic board ect. I have called a bosch rebuilder here in oregon and they replace everything except the computer board. they said they replace those by a date from them?

 

I'd give it a try before replacing the fuel pump. You should replace the lift pump anyway when instralling a new fuel pump, so it couldn't hurt and it's a heck of a lot cheaper than a VP44

 

Good call dieselwrks, now that you mention it, I remember reading about that before, shops with do re builds but not replace the board, which then cause earlier failure down the road.
I found a local that swapped his vp for a hot rod and claims his stock vp is still good. He's an acquaintance from a while back and willing to part with it for 500! Planning to pick that puppy up and have it checked out. That might be my golden ticket.

 

Oh and x2 what dane said, I'm replace the lift pump before the vp for sure for same reasons.

 

Dogen, are you running any kind of lube in your fuel? How many miles on the VP?
