01 and exhaust brake

Boss finally got his 01 back. Lift pump failed and took out the vp again. Then the year-old transmission was fried.

Transmission shop had it over 2 months. Went through the electronics and blamed the bd exhaust brake for the fried transmission.
Thing is, you never knew if the converter was going to lock so the exhaust brake was going to do you any good.

Can the exhaust brake actually toast a transmission? Or are they not as great a transmission shop as the diesel shop claims?

Side note: the 47rh they did after this one is also quite toasty. It was better than after a bumpgrindandslip rebuild but still wouldn't downshift out of drive properly.

These trannys must have the torque converter lock up switch installed with an exhaust brake. But even at that, the tranny in stock form isnt built to stand up to the retarding power of an exhaust brake. For the cost some of these tranny shops charge to rebuild stuff, it would maybe be better to seek out some custom tranny builders like ATS or many many quality companies who assemble them specific to stand up to such stresses.

Something along what I thought.
I tried getting him to go with an ATS several times in the other truck but he keeps going with stock rebuilds.
It does have all the electronics that BD recommends.
His kid tried getting it swapped into his first-gen last week while he was gone, but couldn't find the downpipe for the 01.

I think money he has in it with just this rebuild would have more than covered a complete build from ATS.

To each is own. You're correct in that sometimes having to fix something stock multiple times quickly adds up to doing it once with a quality aftermarket product. Not always though.....
