Yay! I fixed my gear indicator!

Yes, so I fixed my gear indicator. What a pain in the butt that was- you got to take off the dash bezel, take out the map light, take out the instrument cluster and remove the little indicator box... Then get to try to thread a wire back through the tranny lever and the little indicator slide, and try to get the indicator box open to attach the wire... (The box is held together with these little round-headed critters that look like rivets, but actually screw out and back in once you get vice grips on them...)

My problem was that the little green wire connecting the shift lever to the gear indicator box just frayed in half... Stupid little wire. I through some 47 strand nylon-coated stainless steel with sterling silver crimps in there- it should hold.

There... Something for the archives at least...

As long as reverse is still easy to find while driving![whistle] [laugh]

But now somebody can find it if they decide to search the forums for it... ;)

And you'll have your day, you 2500CTD fellow, you'll have your day...

To begin with, the 727 is faster in the quarter mile... ;)

What I do wish that I had was a different little "PRND21" strip of plastic that I could throw in there instead of the stock one... The stock sheet is way off- no matter how you set it, at least one of the numbers isn't going to match up with the slider...

I personally just set it so that the D, 2, and 1 are dead on accurate- those are the only ones that would ever really matter... But when you're in Park the slider is over Reverse, and when you're in reverse the slider is barely off of Neutral...

I'm getting the feeling that none of you are impressed with my incredible mechanical apptitude? :p

Agreed! I accidentally broke the indicator off the wire on my '85 and after I glued it, it worked better than original. It's just an 1/8" shorter and little wider now so it aligns better than original. [laugh]

Oh yes we are. Awe inspiring. Good luck finding that piece of plastic. May I recommend model car styrene (from the molded parts sheet) painted flourescent orange to make a wider indicator needle?:D

I think mine is about to go. The indicator is a full shift point to the left. Must be stretched to about its limit![verymad]

Damnit NJT, I was trying to come up with something clever to say like that, you won big time! Begal hasn't been on here for a few years after he moved back to California, afaik....
