here are the other three pictures.see where we had to cut the rubber where it was bonded togeather just to make it look presentable.which it is not.i guess next year when i heal up financially from this paint job i will get the windshield man to do it. this has been a fiasco from the start. incase you wonder the silver paint i bought (on line) from "www.PaintForCars.com did not spray good at all.the base coat was poor.clear coat and primer were ok.tried to go the cheap way on this job and all failed! i have 3 grand in the front end and cab with an ok paint job.oh yea,my 4" diamond eye exhaust fits perfect, easy to install and was priced right. so,not everything goes bad!

here are some pictures of my poor fitting windshield gasket.
Thanks for the pics.
That joint in the gasket does look ugly. Does it leak?

Cheer up about the paint job, your truck looks better than mine!

There is a special tool for that looking strip.
If you would have pulled the other end out and then feed the other side in behind it the excess goes away.'Like a slinky with out the flip.
Plastic pry bars is a must.
And a ton of GoJo.
I had to use the the black butyl you get with the windshield to stop the water leaks

I don't recall who manufactured the windshield rubber I used...got it off E-bay. Think it was Precision rubber? Anyway the quality was good... and the fit, according to the glass shop, was good as well.

Sorry to hear that your paint, and your windshield gasket didn't turn out like you hoped. There are some things on vehicles I just don't do...not because I can't...but because it's easier, and cheaper, to let someone else do it.

Ok,

You guys have convinced me.

I'm having the star chip fixed on my dodge. I just don't want to deal with this stuff this year, and maybe I'll attempt it in the nice weather....of 2011

Thanks !

Cool 1992 Windshield Fiasco

Hey!
Just went to get a windshield put in my 1992 D250. Went to Safelite and they told me that they could NOT use the old rubber gasket on front windshield.
Then they told me that they called around and they were told that it is DISCONTINUED! So, they have my new windshield and they will not put it in.
Where do I go for a reliable part?

I have run a bunch of '72-'93 Dodge trucks over the past 20 years that I have used 20-30 year old used windshields in trucks using the same windshield gasket as it is re-useable.
Two years ago on my '91.0 I showed up at the local windshield place with my own replacement OEM window I pulled from a '92 and they swapped out my cracked '91.0 windshield, re-used my old window gasket and then charged me $40. It took them 15 -20 minutes tops.

Safelight wants you to buy a new gasket so they can charge you more and to protect them from returns due to a small leak.

I would go someplace else, or tell them to stop whining and get to work.

Oh and welcome to DTR!

Beware....new windshields are thinner glass than oem. There have been a few who have had leaking issues because of the thinner glass.

I am one of these , reuse old gasket . My HS buddy is my glassman . He has done many years of service for me all has been well except this one . He has added so much sealer it is starting to ease down the windshield inside . He also says , new glass is not what old glass was in thickness . So I need a new rubber and try to remove my new glass without breaking it to add new rubber .

Thinking my windshield gasket needs redone. Been noticing small drips of water coming from up there during heavy rain. Hoping it is just a gasket and not the roof rotting out.

I had a nickel sized chip repaired on a '96 Camry and was amazed with the results. I couldn't tell it but it also wasn't in my line of vision either.

So, based on what I'm hearing - thinner new windshields and no decent replacement rubber, it sounds like unless the glass is cracked just repair it?

Is there a way to polish out all the small pits, scratches and such on a 25+ year old windshield whether on the vehicle or a replacement?
