Whine in 4wd

I have noticed lately that when I have the truck in 4wd, that something in the front is whining, it doens't do it in 2wd. I am wondering if its the transfer case?? any thoughts??
where is the bolt that i can check the fluid level, and what fluid does the T-case take? (im assuming its separtate from the trans fluid)
thanks
Nick

transfercase takes atf.
bolt in on the back of the transfer case, you can see two of them from underneath the truck looking from between the diff and the case.

top one is your measurement, just like a differential.

So any trans fluid? Thats easy, I hope its just low, it tends to make the whine only on deceleration...if that means anything.
What model Trans case do i have, its a 1990 auto with a 727.

Stock transfer case is a NP205. It should have 80-90 gear oil in it.
Mine was making some noise and it turned out the flange for the front driveshaft was loose. It has a locking nut on it. I removed the nut and cleaned it up good. Put some dimples on the end that locks it and applied Locktite, torqued it down real good. It was alot quieter. Keep in mind they make some noise in 4x4.

So it takes 80-90w not trans fluid....this is my first 4wd so I was unsure of the potential for making noise. I will check that fluid, it only whines when you let off and are slowing down...hopefully itf just low.

The service manual has a list of all the different kinds of grades of gear oil. I think I used 85W140 with was recommended for severe duty. I think noise in 4wd is just the nature of the beast. Mine has a loose front flange that I need to tighten up but have yet to get around to it.
