Wheels

Ok, I have the stock wheels. They are ok but talking to a guy at Moore's Tire says it is a 6" wheel? I know nothing about wheels other than what looks good and will they hold the tire I want. I would like 275/75 16 tires and he says my wheel will work but it would wear out the middle faster than normal as the tire works better on a 7" wheel with no arching. He said he could get wheels for $110 which looks like these but they are black with chrome centers(? They have something chrome in the middle). Or he could get me a set off a newer Dodge for $25 each. What would look better on a black truck? Chrome would set them off but black wheels with center chrome caps? I am torn but have shallow pocket, actually they look and feel shallow but have false bottoms for reserves.

Please help me with this decision. I dont want to take it in and have the newer dodges wheel not fit but I dont want it to look gawdy. Thanks

Jon

PS, pics would be nice!

Jon, those wheels don't look that bad imo. Do a search in this forum on 2nd gen wheels, I seem to remember a thread not that long ago about the 2nd gen wheel onto our trucks and I think that it was said that there is a problem with back spacing but I'm not positive. I would definatly do some research before you buy them. I also remember a discussion about max tire size on 6" wheels but agian I can't remember exactly where. Sorry I'm not much help tonight . Ryan

I feel for you Ryan. I have been up since 2:30 am at work at 4am home at 4:45pm I have been having brain farts all night long. I like the looks of the American Racing Baja's and Mojave's. If you guys can help me select those kind of wheels, I will be happy. I love the looks of the wheel, just not the looks of the price.

The guy said a newer dodge, chrome ones. I asked him what it came off of, the newest body style or the older one. He said he didn't know, just that they have 4 of them. Can 3rd Gens fit ours or do they have a mm pattern??

Thanks Ryan, and all the other guys too!

Jon

No they wont fit. Pattern is same, but backspacing is off. Actually thats true for later 2nd gens, probably for 3rd too. Stock wheels are 16x7 I thought. 16x6 for dually. The chrome steel 2nd gens, from 94-99ish, will work I believe. Some people on here have them.

Make sure the wheels the tire guy wants to sell you are rated for at least 3200 lbs.

And the advice you got about mounting the stock rims is correct. 275s might not be too bad. But the 285s on mine are not right and I just wish I had the money to replace them right now myself. Pavement traction is horrible and they flex too much even running 60lbs., which is enough to definitely wear them in the middle. So I'm running around 50 and just living with it which basically means marginal stability and minimal center wear.

He said even 265's will do the same thing. He said my tires are just right for my wheels.

I looked a set at TomzWheels. I found the website from a earlier post. For about 300 I get a set of 4 Eagle 058's. Are these ok for my truck in load? And price wise, or they a deal, average or overpriced?? Thanks

Ive seen them run quite a bit with no problems, and ya thats a really good deal, as long as shipping wont eat you up too much.

I believe 4-4.5"b/s is about right. go to dodgeparts.com mechanical section and look for wheels. They have the o/e wheels listed with size and b/s.

No problem. Ive hunted wheels many times, but my free wheels arent so bad as my budget will only let me do the turbo and transmission things right now, and not very easily I might add.

I think the stock wheels are 6.5x16 for SRWs, though they could be 6.0 wide. I ran 265s on my 84 F250, and they did just fine- rode and wore (or didnt wear) just fine, no wobbling, or any of that. BTW- 265s are the same height as 235s, just about an inch wider.

Yea, I want wider. I dont tow that much and a guy at church today suggested I keep my skinnier tires because of hydoplaning issues. Guy used to a all around mechanic. So I respect his decisions. But I want to take this to the pulls. Will wider tires help? The track is clay and manure (county/4H fair grounds) Some full pulls happen but alot of people get close. Thanks
