what should ip rebuild cost?opinions please
So im taking my truck in next wednesday to have the pump rebuilt. The shop is J&H here in redding, very respected i believe. The owner told me he farms out his pump rebuilds to another very respected shop, ReddingFuelInjection. He told me it will cost between 700 and 1500, depending on what has to be done. Now, im not the smartest guy in the world(this is my 3rd old dodge
), but a rebuild is a rebuild, right? I asked what the rebuild kit costs and he thought about 400 for the top of the pump? am i getting scammed? These guys seem legit, put on the norcal diesel rally, are really into old dodges, so i want to believe what they say. J&H charges 240 to take the pump on and off, so the rest of the charge is Redding fuel injection. Opinions please.

A few months back I talked to Justin at Industrial Injection about a rebuild. He said if I send it to them they can build it with 15 to 20% better flow for $850.00, maybe a better price because I got my turbo from them.
I pulled off my own and brought it in to trade it for a rebuilt pump on the shelf for $1025.00. Mine had 235,000 miles on it with 180,000 miles of hiway driving without 0d 727 2600 rpm @ 85 mph so I didn't want to push it. I just replaced the pump as it was making a lot of rattling noise during deceleration. The new one was turned up the max they legally allow and I got 28 lbs of boost @1100 egt with the stock 2600 rpm spring. this is with an hx35 and 16 housing. At least I don't have a failed IP to worry about anymore. I'm starting a new job and will have to commute again and don't want to break down.
$750 is a pretty common charge for a six cylinder rotary IP rebuild around here. A little more if some "not usually worn" parts are needed.
That's rebuild only, not removal and installation.
JP.

I took mine to a Dodge dealer that has a diesel guru whom everyone takes theirs for mods & upgrades, etc.
I think it was a little over $400 but that was just to replace all the gaskets and rings, etc.

How many miles on your pump? and do you run a fuel conditioner? (provides pump lube)
These IP's need to develop ~ 2000PSI, which requires tight tolerances and very clean (no water) fuel.
thus the rebuild can be as simple as installing a $20 gasket kit (but not so trivial to be done on the kitchen table... tho possible)
OR
as complex as replacing many EXPENSIVE precision parts, which then requires "calibration" ~ $300 on a test stand + parts costs + labor.
They can only tell internal condition once its apart, tho I would think there would be a simple pressure and volume test on each port that could be done prior to disassembly. - but... everything costs time , which costs $$, and a pump shop is more inclined to give you an 'as new' product, rather than take the time to pick and choose a partial repair. It only takes them ~ 4 hours, so they can't dink around much, as the guys doing repairs probably have production / flat-rate requirements.
I think the flat-rate on R&R of IP is 4 hrs, so $240 is reasonable.
and unfortunately you need to trust the pump shop for internal repairs. I would expect this guy is using a reputable shop that is not gonna take advantage of a regular customer, but... you might want to grease up your wallet.
pump shop prices- AFAIK
~$300 seal only, no internal work
$650 - little internal work but including test stand calibration
$1000 - $1200 rebuilt core pump - off the shelf
$800 > $1500 rebuild your pump, condition unknown...

im not puking fuel, but when the pump gets warm it wants to die. Im driving to alaska in a year and a half so i figure i shouldnt wait till im in the yukon territory to have it fixed.
Ace, what i meant was thats the reason im getting the pump fixed now, while i have the cash and not waiting till im in the middle of nowhere, canada. The last dodge i drove to alaska, my old faithful 87 1/2 ton, had a problem with puking out a quart of oil, instantly, at complete random times, so this trip, im planning a bit more carefully.
