What to look for when rehabing a Getrag?
 

I have what appears to be a nice condition getrag going in a restoration truck. Last nite I cleaned the outside well and then popped the top cover. It has 160,000 miles on it and appears to be original and unopened till now. It has gear oil in it.

I am not sure what exactly to look for visually when deciding what needs to be replaced. Unfortuneately the truck wasn't highway driveable, but I did get thru all the gears in a parking lot ok.

I would like to refresh it with the wearables that need replacement and not have to go back in for a long time.

The truck never had a hitch, so lack of towing helped saved this trans, but I am also wondering if the gear oil was a help. It is filled to normal factory level. I am aware of running it overfilled. I was wondering what I could rig up to be able to overfill it in the future once it is in place at oil changes.

I think the reason Getrag didn't use gear oil had something to do with being too stiff in cold weather? Never gets below 0* in NJ so I wonder if running a synthetic gear oil would give it longevity?

The syncro rings have little triangle teeth that mesh together, and the triangles dont come to a sharp point, is that normal?

Aside from pitting or chipped or worn teeth and metal in the bottom of the case what else should I look at? (none of that is present so far) I will likely replace the input bearing, fingers crossed on getting it setup right, what else is a must do or improvement?

In my Toyota offroader, I always fill the trans and t-cases through the shifter hole (the shifter just has a snapring holding it in, not sure what your getrag has). If you're looking to overfill, that would certainly be the ticket. And for as often as you need to fill a transmission, the hassle isn't that big of a deal. It's not like a motor oil change.

DRAIN THAT GEAR OIL.
The Getrag takes 5W-30.
I used Royal Purple on my last fill up after I added an aluminum trans cooler that bolts in place of the PTO cover
The gear oil is way to thick and will starve the bearing and ruin the transmission.
The pull the shifter and fill from the top, works great for a drain / oil change, but to just check it and top it off, I fill it from the top bolt hole for the PTO cover.

Watch for cracks in the case. Especially near the reverse-gear idler.
