What a difference!

So, the PO of my truck had an Amsoil bypass system installed in my truck years ago. 2 filters off to the side of the engine compartment and some 4 gallons of Amsoil 15w40.

Well, since I've owned the truck I've probably lost about a gallon of that oil, and replaced it. sometimes with a few quarts of amsoil, sometimes with whatever I had to get me thru.

Turned out my major leak was the VC gaskets. So, I bought some new ones from Napa and installed them. Didn't fix the oil leak...it was leaking through the channel between the gasket and the VCs.

So, I put a little dob of silicone all the way around the edge of the VC and then stuck the gaskets on and reinstalled. That seemed to fix my oil leaks.

So, I decided it was time to change those big ol filters and add the appropriate amount of Amsoil synthetic.

Wow...what a difference. The PO told me the oil wasn't that old, and the filters were good and all, but the oil was BLACK and THICK.

I had been thinking about pulling my injectors and taking them to a shop to be tested, because it was running so dang rough. With the Getrag, I need to get up to about 35 MPH it 3rd before I shift to 4th to avoid lugging it, but the truck was vibrating and just didn't seem happy up there. That totally changed with simply an oil change.

And she smokes a lot less too. It was really hard to run through the gears without leaving the tell tale diesel trail before the change, but now she only smokes when i really romp on it...which is good news.

Anyway, just wanted to share.

Well you can't always believe what the PO say. I wouldn't buy my crew before it went through a Gov't inspection, well the things I've had to fix clearly shows that the PO had a "deal" with someone at an inspection facility.

Glad you got things working better, makes the ride so much nicer.

First thing I always do with a "new" used vehicle is change everything from the radiator to the rear diff.

thrashingcows- Inspection programs are a joke- it depends on who is doing the inspecting, and whom it's for. I'd rather pay the extra cash at the DMV when I buy my tags than go through that hassle and cow manure.

In Jersey they're aren't doing safety inspection anymore, they're relying on cops to see that on the road.

NJ is only doing emissions testing and visual "cat" examination on vehicles originally equipped with them.

Call me dense, but I don't understand how an oil change made such a difference. Did you change a fuel filter too? From what I am gathering you are saying the oil was so thick it bogged down the engine?? I am not picking on you, I just don't comprehend what you are saying. Please elaborate on your theory. I thought oil issues wouldn't affect a VE injection system.

Yeah, it made a world of difference, but it didn't solve all my issues. A few hours of driving has shown that the roughness in the engine is still there.

My plan is to pull my injectors tomorrow and take them to a shop to have them tested. After that...I really don't know what to check next.
