what is this?
 

I was looking at the engine running yesterday and found a little hole with coolant in it so I tried to clean it with a cloth and found it is about 1.5" deep and threaded. Is it supposed to be a bolt in here?

I just went and looked at mine and it's open too. Doesn't look as if theres ever een one in there, all rusty and gummy definately threaded..........Hmmmm....now I'm curious!

I think it is a bolt boss. The question is, how'd the antifreeze get there? :confused:

you sure the heater hose isnt leaking? when cold i test using pressure on the system, to reveal leaks not traceable when hot, metal contracts causing "mysterious" leaks

I checked the hose but no I don't it is that. The only thing there is the t-stat maybe the seal could be leaking but I don't see how coolant could get there.

Anymore ideas? I still don't know what this is. Oil and coolant are clean (not mixed) it isn't loosing any coolant either but I just can't leave it alone until I find out what it is.

Looks like a good place for a lifting eye should you need pick up the head...

It looks like either a mount for an accessory or a bolt to hook a chain to if you need to lift the engine. As for the coolant, I;d check the clamp on that hose by it.

i dont know what you have back east by comparison, our autozone parts supplier, will loan a cooling system pressure tester to a customer with deposit of tool value,pressurize it cold.

it's not a mounting point for a hook used to lifted the engine or the head. the eye-bracket that's between the thermostat housing and the head is what you use to lift the engine and/or head. i'm betting the heater hose is split and you just can't see it. with the tight turn that it makes, the vibrations from the engine and the constant contraction and expansion from heating cycles, over time it will spring a leak. replace it and go from there.

Clean out the hole, poke in a piece of cotton-ball, and watch it to see how soon it becomes soaked with coolant.

It probably will take months.

I wouldn't worry about it.



Whenever this thirty-day monsoon abates, I will look at several of mine to see if there is anything bolted into that hole.:cool:

Well sorry for the rush guys, turns out the upper hose was in fact leaking, I just couldn't tell but I put My finger in it again when it was cold and there was the coolant that just happen drip right in that little hole [duhhh].
