whaddya think?

i found a 96 burnt to a CRISP in a bone yard around here. couldn't quite make out what turbo was on it, but am wondering what the chances of it being better/able to replace my stock 93. would i need to take the exhaust manifold as well? i didn't measure it, but it looked as though the flange was a little bigger. anyway, thanks for reading.

The exhaust manifold is the same on 1st and 2nd gen engines. As long as the head, timing cover, and the injectors, lines, and pump are okay, you should be all set -- though you might want to buy a new hx35 turbo rather than run your H1 on the later model engine.

OOPS -- I was reading it as though you wanted to put the whole engine in your truck, but thought the turbo had been toasted in the fire . . .

Maybe I am projecting my P-pump envy . . .

Re:whaddya think?

ya, i've got to rebuild my turbo soon anyway so when i came across this, i thought it might be a better way to go. just have the burnt one rebuilt and put it in place of stock 93 (turbo only). but the thing got REALLY hot. as in, i've never seen a vehicle that was so messed up from bumper to bumper. melted metal and what not. so, will it work?

Re:whaddya think?

You will not see much of a gain over your existing turbo when you go with the 96 turbo. IMO I would go through the 96 models turbo thoroughly if you still want to buy it.

If you are going to be rebuilding it, I would go with a larger compressor wheel such as the HX40's 6 fin wheel, mill the housing to fit the new wheel, full balance and any needed parts.

Re:whaddya think?

i guess what i'm wondering is if i should rebuild the stock one (and put a 16cm housing on it) or spend the money on this burnt one (which doesn't have an intake side and needs a new compressor wheel) thanks for the help everybody.

Re:whaddya think?

I guess the choice really comes down to what YOU want to do. The H1C rebuild kit will run you about 60-70 bucks + labor.
The same for a reuild kit for the HX35 + any parts missing + labor.

IMO..I would rebuild the H1C, unless you are going to get real wild with the upgrades in the near future.

Re:whaddya think?

Considering the damage to the 96 I would only think about it if you could get the turbo for free. Rebuild kits are closer to $100 since the first of the year. If the compressor wheel is damaged I would not even touch it. Used HX35s in good condition can be found pretty easily in the $200 + range.

Some of the HXs were core balanced (shaft assembly balanced in the center section) and others were shaft balanced (shaft assembly balnced outside the center section. The later method each component has a balance mark so If you are careful you can rebuild it yourself otherwise at the very least you will need to have a shop balance the turbo for you. This can be anywhere fron $25 to $100 depending on the shop.

The H1C is a pretty decent turbo. There are hybrid kits availible fotr the H1C. I believe Old Smokey has or had one on his truck that he was happy with.

Jay
