Well I think the Trans gave up.
Well I think the Trans gave up.
I was doing some running around this morning on my day off. 3rd gear has been popping out almost all the time. Well today I pretty much let out the most violent pop yet and now there is a little gringing noise in thrid and no movement of the truck. All other gears are fine. What do I need to get to fix this???? I'm guessing the synco has nothing left to grab because its worn to nothing. I prefer to rebuild it myself. Whats the kit to order??? What should i replace while I'm in there??? I knew this was coming just hate it when it happens unplanned and in the middle of a rather harsh winter.
Definitely check your shift forks. They may have been part of the problem to start with (not totally engaging). I'd plan on replacing all the synchros as well as all of the tapered bearings and seals. Also pilot bearing and clutch if necessary (sure hate to have to pull it again).
PM me your e-mail address if you don't have the Getrag portion of the FSM. That should get you thru the disassembly and reassembly.

Probably the first thing you need to do before buying all the parts is to remove the tranny and disassemble it to find out what broke or parts that are worn out. Like 12Valve@heart mentioned if parts look iffy then just replace them, (sure hate to have to pull it again)
Where is a good place to buy good parts for the rag? I found rebuild kits on ebay with syncros, are these any good? What about the shift forks?? I would take it apart and then order the parts but at this point in life I'm lacking time and space. I'm guessing this stuff is not aviable locally at just any place in stock no waiting? I just don't want the thing all apart on the bench for 3 weeks while I'm waiting for parts. What I think I want to do is Order every part I think I'm going to need and Have it waiting. Right now here is the list, Rebuild kit with syncros, Shift Forks, input shaft. The clutch is still working fine but I'm toying with doing since I think its the OEM unit but not sure on that one yet?? I would like to put the ball bearing pilot bearing in.
This week will be shot with work and then next sunday I leave for SLC for a week so I figure I'll start fresh in March and knock it out on my weekend when hopefulley its warmer. Tomorrow I'm recommisioning the Rabbit.

That's a good list to start with and probably all that you will need. Add a Clutch release bearing and depending on wear a new clutch and pressure plate. I got my parts from drivetrain.com, they also advertise on ebay. Good luck. When I re-assembled my tranny, and installing the cluster in the case I taped up the syncro ring to keep it from moving around so the springs and ***** won't go flying, once it got match up with input shaft I just cut the tape and removed it.
Check www.standardtransmission.com
I got some of my parts there and some from Blumenthal's in Oklahoma City.
As you're probably aware, upgrading the pilot bearing to ball bearing will require machine work so make sure that you have an exchange flywheel on the way or that you have found a machine shop that can handle the job.

well here are the prices I have found.
Bearing seal kit with syncros 240.00
input shaft 101.00
Shift forks. 67.00-72.00-57.00
So about 500 in parts which is ok.
What else might I need?
Do those prices sound in check to everyone?? From the looking around those seem about ball park. The bearings are all Koyo or USA made from what I was told over the phone.
Now should I do the clutch and pilot bearing now or later? Clutch seems fine but is most likely the OEM unit. How easy is it to find a place that can do the bore job on the flywheel? And where do I find the pilot bearing and bore size specs?
