Warn Hubs

For you 4x4'rs

when you lock your hubs is there any play between the hub and the axle that you notice ? Today, I tested my hubs with the wheels in the air, and I noticed a decent amount of play in the hub as I rotated the wheel forwards and reverse.

Time for new hubs ?

It seems that there are 6 splines in those hubs one machined one broached and four cast so there can be quite a bit of slack in them.

Mine has some play in there. I don't think that it is supposed to be a real tight coupling and that the play is by design...Mark

I can check mine this weekend - I rebuilt/packed everything, bearing/races/seals. I don't remember any play after loading and setting the nuts. This was a couple months back.

cheers
Doug

Mine seemed pretty tight as well. Not much play.

After locking the hub, when it's turned from one direction to another, there is at least 2 or 3 degrees of play before the shaft moves along with the rotor.

I guess it's time to buy new ones...

Anyone know if the "turn ****" that locks/unlocks the hub is available to purchase without the entire hub... mine is broken on passenger side and I can only grip it with pliers... NAPA wants $197 for entire hub set ???!!

Is there sticky thread for replacing them and how do you determine its time to replace??

I have a growling from time to time on left front when locked in ... not sure if it growls when unlocked just can't remember right now.

The growling may be the hub, but it also may be the axle u-joint

Jack the tire up, lock the hub and spin the tire and see if you can hear anything. Maye you'll be able to pinpoint it
