VE Pump Removal Tips?

OK, after doing a search on how to pull my VE pump I'm totaly confused.
I want to remove my pump and instal a substitute from an doner truck (supposed to be a new built pump but has the Assembly # & yellow tamper paint like a dealer shelf model) while mine gets sent off to be bombed.

Some threads (and the shop manual) say to index the TDC with the pins prior to removal AND lock the pump. Others say just make sure the key is up at 12:00 and pull it. Which is correct for a '93? At SOP3 I thought Greenleaf indicated that you couldn't reinstall incorrectly??[duhhh]

Since I'm temporarily using a new/different pump, the timing will not be the same even if I mark it first. How does one time it under the shade tree or is that just totaly impossible?

ANY tips and hints appreciated - as long as you don't muddy the waters further![redface]

Thanks guys,

If you align all of the marks like the manual says, the key will be at around 6 o clock. Then, when you take the pump off, you risk dropping the key out due to gravity. If you turn it to where the key is at 12 o clock, the risk of dropping the key is greatly reduced. You can't put the pump on wrong. Simply rotate the new pump till it's keyway is at 12 o clock and install it on to the gear.

I just did this last week myself for the first time. Don't be intimidated, it's dead easy. That keyway won't allow you to put the pump on wrong.

If you are worried about timing then the easiest way so you feel comfortable doing it. Is rotate engine until the pin in the back pops in.(this is in the instructions you probably have already read)

once it is lined up that should be top dead center. then the way to check to make sure is to take off the serp belt, take off fan, top pulley, and timing cover.

when cover is off you will see this ( see pics below)
This pic is off the crank markings

and this pic is of the gear markings

if all these markings are lined up then you are Top Dead Center.

after you see this then you can proceed and take off Inj Pump ( by following the rest if instructions)
when you put new Inj Pump on just make sure the woodruff key lines up with the notch in the gear and that all the markings shown above line up and you should be fine..

FYI: it does not always work perfect here is my example of not working

Hope this helps
