Man, sure would love to see pictures of your progress. One question: when your drive pressure number is higher than your boost, there is some "inefficiency", and when the ratio is 1:1 or as close as possible, then you have complete fuel utilization. Is this more or less right?

Yeah, 1:1 would be ideal. Some inefficiency is to be expected, I would guess, since the engine does have to do some work to get the turbo to spool up. Kinda like pushing a broke down truck-hard to get it rolling, but once it is rolling, much less effort is required....ok, crappy analogy 1:1 doesn't mean so much that there is complete use of the fuel as much as it means that the turbo is appropriately sized for the amount of fuel being thrown at it. That's the beauty of the vgt (once operable) You've got hy-9 spool, but when you throw a bunch of fuel at it, the housing can grow to accomodate and keep drive pressure under control. Of course, the ultimate limitation will be the amount of air the cold side can produce. Even though it's 'only' 60mm, this thing cleans up a LOT more fuel than my h1c 60mm hybrid did on my 89. I'm very pleased with this setup so far, just have to get off my butt and finish it off, lol! 'Course, I got time now....managed to shear two teeth of the d80 ring gear yesterday....doht!!!

WOW! thats quite some power to sheer a few teeth... or its got plenty of miles and it was time for something to break! Hope you work all the kinks out and get it running sweet.

Lots of miles and little bit of power The clutch allows some pretty rude boosted burnouts though....

i guess i don't yet RESPECT the amount of power these things can generate... or i'm just not feeling it through my slush box...

Hehe, hehe...I brake stand in 3rd gear to about 25psi, dump the clutch and floor it and the 315's vaporize. IF it catches traction, all gauges peg and it'll run to about 70mph in 3rd. Shift at 4100 and grab 4th if you're feeling lucky A good clutch rocks, but a built auto is even better, from what I've heard, I just like to row my gears

I did basically the same thing in the topkick line truck with the spicer 7speed trans... shifted at around 3grand (which is ALOT on them trucks) and it actually went smoothly and somewhat lively for a big old 25,000lb (33,000GVWR) truck

OK, so i was talking to a cummings generator technician about a bunch of things. One thing in particular was this variable turbo, the recall and the controller for this. There is a stand alone controller for this turbo, but we couldn't decide just how exactly it worked. I searched for this controller and couldnt find it... but supposedly one exists.

You had something like a stage IV H1C before and you are saying the VGT is a BIG improvement? I love my stage IV 60mm with the 16cm housing, but it has a narrow power band. It lags horribly and then spins the tires when I finally get boost like a two stroke mororcycle. I like the hit, but I would rather have usable powerdown low AND the top end charge.

Yup, definitely a better turbo overall. It's still a 60mm wheel, but I think wheel design tech. has come a long way since the h1/hx series. And, with the variable housing, it's like changing turbine housings on the fly. It really is the best of both worlds. I've got a standard w/g controller referenced with drive pressure to open the housing. Haven't been able to try it since I toasted the rear axle. I was just using a spring that would allow the collar to open under drive pressure. Worked pretty well and cooled like a son of a gun. The w/g actuator will just give more precise control, I think. Haven't got the e-brake figured yet. The video I linked to earlier in this thread is the direction I'm heading. Hopefully I'll have my new-to-me d80 in by the weekend and I can get back to test and tune

Oh, Fleece Performance makes a standalone unit. Not listed on their website, you have to call. It's pricey. It's on a few 3rd gens running around. Referenced off boost, drive and a few other inputs. I guess they have software you can program at home too. Guys running it are loving it.

Cool! Get it installed yet? Work and general lazieness have kept me from making much more progress. The spring controller works well, but I still have no e-brake. I still like the turbo a lot overall. The perfect daily driver chrager, IMO
