Valve job done!!! Need input!!
Valve job done!!! Need input!!
OK GUYS... valve job is done... step by step just like the sticky... Every valve seemed to be on the tight side! couldn't hardly even slip the feeler gauge in!! I re-did every one so that the feeler could slip in nice and easy just slight friction.. Is that normal to have them all too tight across the board like that?? now i'm listening for valve noise and I think my mind is messing with me.. as I move to the front of the engine i start to hear an odd out of place ticking and it goes away as I move to the side...hmm.. also I think I hear valve chatter when its hot and I rev the motor quick and let it drop off, with the hood open.. I dont know.... could be my mind playing tricks.... it idles very well and sounds great at WOT. I just worry about the valves being too loose now seeing as I had to adjust each one..but the feeler gauge slips in and out nice and easy now...soooo.........ehh
Tell me what you have experienced with this
Is that ticking towards the front normal?
How bout that little bit of chatter when I rev the motor and drop off
Does it sound like I made the valves too loose?
what will loose valves show signs of? and what wil they hurt?
Any input helps!!!! I think my mind is F-ing with me

At 72K miles I wouldn't think your valves wouldn't have receeded into the seats. That would cause the tappets to get tight. If you have had them tight all along, and now you have them loose, it'll make a racket to your ears. You might want to set them at .019 and .009.
its not really a racket... sounds like before just a little "meaty-er" from the exhaust....there was some friction on the feeler..not much... it slid around in there nice and easy " maybe cause of all the oil" it seems ok.. better where I have it at .010 and .020 than too tight right?
out of order??? I just went cylinder by cylinder.. when the exhaust was all the way down I would adjust the intake... and when the intake was down I would do the exhaust.. 18ft pounds on the lock nut
I adjust them one at a time also, but I turn the engine until the exhaust just starts to move and adjust the intake. Then I bar the engine over until the intake is almost closed, and do the exhaust. I rn through them twice, then start the engive ling enough for the oil pressure to come up, shut it off and check them one more time. That way you know they are perfect.
One thing I have found, specially when it is on my own truck, is after you do some work, you get funny noises.
Take it for a drive and relax. I am a licensed automotive mechanic by trade, and I still have the "Mechanics Worries" after I finish a truck. If you are off a bit then redo it.
One of the worst critics is yourself.
Take it for a drive, come home, crack yourself a cold one, pat yourself on the back.

I like you, you know how to put it.. I just worry... I did everything like the sticky says and the truck drives and sounds nice.. I didn't start the truck but I did keep turning the engine and checking everything twice. I dont see how .010 and .020 could be to loose....thats what the sticky says... I'm just wierded out that they were all too tight
Some of the people are setting it at 0.008 and 0.018".
When you go and check with the speck of 0.010 and 0.020" then it will feel tight. I know on my truck that i set them at 0.010" and 0.020", but I set them "Tight". Not low friction to get the feeler gauge out, but a good drag.
I just depends on who set them and what their preference is.

I know exactly what You say, I did mine and I could hear it was louder instead or soft like it was before the 'maintenance' but it is smooth so I live with it. Mine where a bit tight too and I turned the engine for 2 days bc I didn't think I was in the right spot until I decided which was the precise spot for Me and adjusted the valves from that point on.
Cheers.

I figure better at spec(.020 .010) than too tight..
