Bringing this back up: Needing a water pump for my 1993 engine that is streaming coolant out of the weep hole. Not wanting to pay 150 bucks for an indian made cummins pump with a low flow un-shrouded 5 blade impeller this time around!

(source of combined info Dodge Cummins Water Pump Comparison- Tech Info - Dodge Cummins Diesel Forum)

A couple of things I've put together this evening after pouring over multiple forums, rock auto, Oreilly, Auto Zone, and Napa's website.

This is in regards to the 5 blade shrouded version of the pump. This is the highest flowing of the three types, the 2nd best being the 6.7 version with 7 plastic blades and the lowest flow being the non-shrouded 5 blade. I've seen there are metal bladed 7 blade ones available as well.

Currently:

Napa Sells new Tru Flow pumps which are reboxed Gates, made in China for 55ish bucks. Gates 41181 Geno's sells and recommends these highly as well.

Autozone Sells New Duralast pumps which are actually Airtex pumps for 55 bucks. BWP-726

O'Reilly Sells the New "Murray" pump which is Also the Airtex for 55 odd bucks. CP7145

O'Reilly also has a "Master Pro" version of the pump for 44 bucks but it is actually a GMB.

I think I'm going to go with the Napa sourced Gates and keep the receipt handy in case I need to exercise my warranty, and there is no AutoZone in my vacation area I drive to every summer, only Napa. They're easy enough to replace, just messy. I really want the shrouded one though. Running the heat exchanger, AND HE300VG water jacket off of the Aux pressure port off the side of the block, and need as much extra pressure as I can muster, I suppose.

BTW, all of these pumps are available at rock auto for between 20-35 bucks, GMB being the cheapest and AC Delco being the most expensive, but Airtex and Gates are pretty cheap at around 25 bucks.

OH , and as an aside and info pertaining to Oliver's question - the newer style cummins pumps are made in USA, check out Geno's and their pics to confirm:

(All of these pumps will fit a first gen)

Don't the later cummins water pumps turn the opposite way?

From my research - they're all listed as counter-clockwise rotation, and have the same bolt pattern/spacing, and same diameter pulley. The crazy thing is that these re-boxed parts sold at auto parts stores are all "keystone" meaning marked up - DOUBLE the wholesale price seemingly!

So what is the difference between the two 5.9 pumps and the two 6.7 pumps?

I don't know for sure. I would guess that the newest cummins pump has less flow so it can run a bit hotter for emissions. One of the reasons all of the changes started coming about was that the cooling system needed to be de-rated for emissions, and/or better heater core operation in cold weather, with faster warm-ups. I think there is more of a juggling act with the newer trucks with all the EPA components.

This info was on a different forum and quoted by a factory/dealer rep, but I don't have a link.

The flow is one difference claimed by a pump manufacturer. Also the shrouded is said to prevent against damage during cavitation? Not that any of the other types are reported suffer any detrimental wear without the shroud so that makes me wonder.

I bought one of the non-shrouded ones from Rock Auto, I can't remember which, but it actually interfaced with the metal inside when it was tightened down and wouldn't turn. Real quality part...Mark
