U-joint Slips In The Yoke

I have a problem with the u-joint that connects to the Getrag. 2WD. Brand new joint.

I noticed a minor vibration in the driveline.

When I investigated, the u-joint behind the transmission could be slid back and forth between the locating nibs.

It also had some play in the straps. Also new.

I slipped a .030 feeler gauge between the nib and cup and the play was gone.

I found two electrical-knock-outs that were very close to the cup diameter.

I machined an edge on each to .015 to slip between the cups and nibs.

I placed four layers of an old metal measuring tape between the cups and straps and tightened the bolts.

This took out all the slop.

The joint fits good in the shaft yoke.

What is going on with my u-joint??

Has anyone else experienced this??

I had it happen years ago on a 78 K-20 Chevrolet; I made centering nibs on the u-joint straps themselves to fix that one.

Thanks.

Sounds like you got the wrong U-Joint. There should be NO slop whatever or you'll have vibrations. But then you already figured that out.

U Joints

Had that problem recently with mine and the guys at the driveline shop said that the yoke is worn and needs to be replaced. In my case the replacement cured the problem. Maybe others more knowing can chime in.

Measure the new joint to the old one, it may be the wrong one, if they are the same find you a yoke. There should be no more than a couple thos. diff beteewn new and old.

Was yours a Getrag??

If so, where and how much for a yoke??

It has to be the right joint; it fits the shaft-yoke too precisely to be wrong.

Thanks.

some u-joints have different size bearing and cup assembly on shaft end vs yoke end... could still be the wrong one.

Just to make everyone happy, I ordered a new Spicer U-joint # 5-160X and installed it.

Prior to installation, I dis-assembled both the Spicer and the Advance PDQ that was in the shaft and measured every dimension of every component of both joints with a dial-caliper.

Every measurement was in agreement, max. width, cup dia., cross width and dia., needle length and dia., cup wall thickness; everything matched right to the thousandth; any part of the two joints could be used on the other.

I am sure the Spicer is the higher quality joint; but, I could see no difference in manufacturing tolerance levels where fit was concerned.

Replacing the U-joint with the Spicer did not change my problem.

Does anyone know where and how much I can get a new transmission-yoke, 2WD??

Can I get this from Spicer?? It has Spicer stamped all over it; but, if there is a number, I can't find it.

Thanks.

spicer shop should be able to help you. Could maybe call a dodge dealer and get a part number as well.

Have you tried Standard Transmission? They have lots of Getrag parts.

Finally, problem solved.

I thought I would finish the story, in case someone else ever had the same situation.

I finally found a dealer that actually wanted to sell parts and even had it in stock.

This is not intended as an advertisement; but, I got a new Spicer replacement yoke from Six States Distributors of Ogden, Utah, ph# 801-621-8772 attn. RICK.

For a 2wd Getrag, the part number for the yoke = DA 3-4-10931-1 SPICER Cost= $101.00

The part number for u-joint straps = DA 3-70-28X SPICER Cost= $4.60

I called a couple of the more well known sources and they would take my number, saying that they would look it up and call me back.

This kept me close to the phone, waiting, with no returned calls, not my preferred way of doing business.

Thanks for everyones help.
