U-Haul trailer denial
U-Haul trailer rental DENIED!
well I got a surprise today when I called U-Haul to rent a car trailer (flatbed) and was told that my 1st Gen didn't weigh enough for their insurance policy
car weight is 4,200#, their trailer weighs 2,100#, which exceeds the weight of my truck
dang it I tow my 4,500# boat and 2,500# trailer all over God's creation with no trouble
apparently their flatbed car trailer has no brakes
OR maybe this is their gambit to get me to rent one of THEIR trucks (which is what Penske does)
it ain't right

that's what it looked like on their website, but the rep in White Plains insisted it didn't
they're not gonna budge if I'm truthful about the load (1985 diesel M-B wagon for parts)
I will take Trooper Thorn's advice and rent from a smaller outfit that isn't run by an insurance company

X2. Rented one earlier this year and it had surge brakes. Now that I recall, I wasn't given the run around about insurance. In fact, I asked for insurance. Maybe try an authorized U-haul dealer rather than one of U-haul's own yards.
I think any trailer (single axle included) rated to handle at least 2,000lbs. should have brakes.

You may need to go to a U-Haul, independent dealer and as said earlier tell them you are hauling a Volkswagen. I have a good friend who is a independent U-Haul dealer. And yes all of the car haulers have surge brakes, their trailers are built much heavier than budget. Good luck, Mike.
You have to tell them you are going to pull a tiny car with a big heavy truck. I once lent out my 3/4-ton Suburban for somebody to pick up their rental.
Glad I didn't have to deal with a rental this time.... borrowed a tandem flat-deck trailer to bring my most recent Dodge home. Variable-drop hitch, electric brakes, ramps, chains, loadbinders, the whole works... gonna buy one eventually.

the more I think about it, the angrier I get
this company is in the logistic business and should know that a 3/4 ton long-bed truck is fully capable of towing (and stopping) a 6,500# load
our trucks are rated up to 12,000 (with trailer brakes of course) if I'm not mistaken
my truck tows my 6,500# boat and trailer (with surge brakes) like it's not even back there
THAT'S WHY I BOUGHT A 3/4 TON PICKUP
arggghhhh

They refused to rent me a "car hauler" to move an all wheel drive car. They said they could only rent me a car dolly. Excuse me, you can't tow an all wheel drive car, especially that one on a car dolly. They didn't care, that's what their book said. I should have taken it, then sued them for the damages. I hated that car anyway.
