Turn signal switch problems

My turn signal switch is acting up. Turning left works fine but turning right the front light and the dash indicator won't function unless pressure is applied to the handle. Also the windshield washer no longer works when the button is pushed on the end of the handle. Related?

Anyone have any advice on removing the switch/repair? Does the steering wheel need to be pulled?

Thanks in advance.

Edwin

I know this probably doesn't help if you want to keep it all stock; ...but, when the switch went haywire one time too many on my 1985 Ford, I made one of my favorite of many many modifications = I ditched the factory switch in favor of a genuine externally-mounted Signal-Stat 7-wire switch and I wouldn't have it put back original for a thousand bucks _as bad as I need the money_that's how much I like it.

Then, a few years ago, the switch on the son's 1990 Dodge/Cummins began acting up in much the same way you describe.

I looked into replacing the switch with another factory one and ditched that idea real quick; instead, I got one of the Signal-Stat lookalikes from E-Bay and mounted it; it worked out just as well as the one on my Ford.

There are many things I like about these external switches; the first of which is the fact that they are non-cancelling = the switch stays wherever you put it until you purposefully turn it off; I just hate to be swinging a long trailer wide in a busy intersection and the stupid soccer-mom signal switch keep turning itself off.

I also love the fact that, the way I wired these, the key-switch has nothing to do with whether they are on or not.

Plus, I much prefer the two-wire flasher over the 3-wire and I only require a single flasher for the whole works instead of one for the signals and another for the hazards.

I would have to look in the truck, but I am fairly certain that on his truck I also moved the dimmer-switch to the floor ----- where God intended them to be; moving the dimmer-switch was not a disadvantage to the project because plans were to do that anyway = I hate a column-mounted dimmer-switch.

His truck is 1990 and I am pretty sure the wipers and washer button were never on the turn signal switch and I am puzzled why they would be on your 1989.

Anyway, this is just another option for you to explore.

'89/90 will have the wiper and washer function on the turn signal switch.

I can not remember if you have to pull the steering wheel to get at some of the attachment points of that switch.

Turn signal switch

You don't need to pull the steering wheel. You will need a security torx driver (they have a dimple on the end) to open the cover on the column to access the switch.

Or - just move up to a big city where they don't use turn signals and somebody on the corner will run up and wash your windshield for you?

I don't know how I would react if somebody run out and went to washing my immaculate windshield with who knows what kind of filthy gritty equipment; I would probably give him five bucks to not wash it.
