Turbo Questions

Turbo Questions

I have a 92 Dodge Cummings Turbo Diesal the turbo stoped working and im trying to figure out why. it still spins freely but it dosnt spool up or down. and thats about all i know about turbos. Any information would be helpfull even if its just how they do work. figure it would be a good thing to know.

RawIDea check your turbo for excess play. Pull the intake "air filter side hose" off and wiggle the shaft up and down and in and out. If it has much play pull up on the shaft and turn it at the same time, If it rubs the vanes on the housing it very well may be locking up when under pressure, also do this while pushing down on the shaft. If it does rub a rebuild is in order. If it doesn't rub do as avengerdude27 says check all the hoses on the outlet side we call them "hump hoses", to see if they are connected tight and have no leaks. Do the hose check on both side of the intercooler. Good luck

the intercooler would be for the oil right? hard line going from the turbo into the oil filter?
and i found parts that look like they might be for a jake break intaled. i have 3/8 vacume lines going into what looks like a control box that hooks into the turbo. and is a turbo rebuild a do it yourself or is it a outsorce type of job?

Are you saying that you have no boost at all on your gauge? I'm trying to install a boost gauge now to check my turbo. I'm not sure I would try the rebuild, but here is a good page for our turbos http://imageevent.com/moosecreekmaple/turborebuild .

The turbo compressor discharges into the intercooler between the radiator and the a/c condenser through a 2 1/2 inch tube. The charged air then goes from the intercooler outlet just below the battery through a 2 1/2 inch tube to the intake elbow which bolts to the grid heater on top of the intake manifold. The intercooler is what is called an air to air heat excahnger that cools the intake air before it goes into the intake elbow. It doesn't have anything to do with oil as long as the turbo seals are good.

If you find all your clamps and hump hoses are in place and don't leak then I would check the turbo shaft.
Remove the clamp on the exhaust pipe elbow leaving the turbo and shove the exhaust elbow to one side. There is a nut on the turbine shaft that will take a socket. The size escapes me for now but 19 mm rings a bell. With the socket and a breaker bar in place on the exhaust nut try turning the compressor wheel with your fingers. If the wheel turns and the wrench doesn't you most likely broke a shaft. BE CAREFUL. You don't want to damage the compressor wheel or your fingers.

The turbo on these trucks is very quiet, you will not hear it on a stock truck.

A boost gauge will tell you if it is working.

Like Wanna said... I kept hearing people talk about the turbo scream and I never hear mine. I installed my gauge today and took the truck out. The ground is flat here and I got down on the go pedal but the best I could do was about 9 pounds before I was up to speed. I am pretty sure that it would have climbed on up with a load. I am wondering how you know the turbo is not spooling. Anyway, good luck.

ok i believe i have it figure out the turbo was leaking in between the intake cover piece retaining ring had been streatched out. im not shure what would cause that but it had blow by and wasnt providing preshure. thanks for the info guys it helped alot. i did notice how quiet the turbos are its kinda wierd.
oh and the air filter was massivly clogged too. my dads truck he just finaly asked me to look at it after he changed fuel filters and it wouldnt start.

i knew the turbo wasnt spooling by taking off the mass air intake hose and looking inside the turbo wasnt spining at all no matter how high i reved the engin up. i like going over engins with a stethatscope lets you hear inside running parts. most turbo screams ive heard have been coming off of chevys all there #$%# screams. but im more used to a banks sidwinder spool up its the only other one ive ran accrost and its in a buddys ford
