Turbo question 1992 5 speed getrag
I am wanting to install a smaller turbo housing on my little dodge D 250 5 speed stick. When I go from 3rd to 4th its to big of a step ,,,, it's hard to pick it up. I' wondering if it will help if I put a 16 cm housing on it if it would help ,,,, but if I have an 18.5 cm on it now then a 16 cm won't help much. But if it has a 21.5 cm then the 16cm might help The assem. # is 3531456 if someone knows how to cross that number into the size it is it would help
Thanks Dieselhillbilly

Best to check the stamp on the turbine housing. I believe you'll have the 21cm. Interesting you are having problems with the 3-4 shift. The 2-3 is usually the complaint as it is a larger jump.
Just go with the 16 or better yet find a 12 or 14 wastegated or a HE351CW with the 9CM hot side.
However in your case I don't think the turbo will solve the issue as much as removing the high idle screw and adusting the throttle linkage to the inboard hole, and tightening up all of the slack on the throttle cable. And/or Getting a 366/3200 governor spring with the optional 60lb valve springs.

Papecat's advise is excellent.
Adding RPM range will make you happiest on the cheap.

Don't think 5 speed ever came with anything but the 18.5 CM housing.
HX35 as a minimum upgrade for the money, or better yet jump to the HE351CW for no more money but a little more work.

There's supposed to be a number cast into the housing somewhere, but IMO, doesn't matter. The 12cm w/g housing (as found on WH1C & HX35) is where its at, or the HE351CW if you can tackle the extra plumbing.

If the turbo is off and hasn't been ported, the size is stamped in the bottom of a runner just inside the flange area. I love the 12 cm housing with a 5 speed and 3200 spring. I think it gets a little hot with a turned up automatic. I prefer a 14 cm housing although it is hard to find one at a decent price.
