turbo compressor wheel not spinning?
Well, i just installed an 89 turbo on my 93, and i took the compressor wheel and housing off my 93 and put it on. i torqued everything, but the compressor wheel does not spin freely and when you start the truck, the wheel does not spin?
what did i do wrong?
what did i do wrong?
the only thing i could have too tight would be the compressor wheel nut, correct? i used a torque wrench and did 135 inch pounds /12 and its about 11.4 ft lbs. does the nut on the end of the wheel spin with the wheel, or does that stay in one place when the wheel is spinning? how could the wheel be coming in contact with the housing? is there any way i could have the wrong wheel?
No if you used the housing off your turbo it should work. Sounds like you torqued it too tight. It just takes a little bit to bind it up. I would use an inch pound wrench for sure. The foot pound wrench is not sensitive enough. Make sure your housing is on straight and even. Check the wheel as you torque it and stop if it binds and doesn't spin free. Once you bind it up you will have to tap it back a little to free it up and then retorque it.

Did you slide the shaft out of the bearing at all? If you did there is a sealing ring that may have popped out and is now binding. I had a heck of a time getting mine back in so it could definitely be a problem.

its not the nut, because even with the nut off the shaft does not spin freely. its almost like the shaft is getting sucked into the coupling in the back and causing it not to spin freely? is there supposed to be a bearing back there?
Like I said even with the nut off if you had over tightened it you will need to tap the shaft back gently to free it up again. The bearings are internal. Did it spin freely before you took it apart?
Ok, well i figured out what it was. there is a small washer on the turbo shaft, on the side that goes into the exhaust housing. this was getting sucked into the turbo and causing it to hang up. what is this washer on the shaft? i just pulled it off for now.
Don't run it with that washer off, it is a sealing washer to keep the exhaust out of the turbo housing. You really don't need to double post just post in one place and it will bump to the top.
OK, thanks. sorry about that, just needed an answer really quick. i had a weird ring on it, that curved out at the end and this was catching, so i just cut that end off and made it so the ring sits inside of the groove. its all back together now. thanks guys.
