Tuning Questions
My first post,
I have been lurking, researching and with the help of the DTR picked the starting mods to my truck. I inherited this truck from my dad when he passed away from cancer last year. It was the work horse for our farm and was my dads favorite truck. I sold his 2005 gas 2500HD GMC and am using the money left over to rebuild the Dodge. The 93 W350 4WD needed tons of maintenance items (All wheel bearings and seals, u-joints, shocks, exhaust, steering shaft, steering gear, PS pump, rear axle seals and drums)
Engine mods to this point, are BD XXX pulse injectors, old smokey fule pin, 16cm & HTT stage III compression, flowmaster 3.5" exhaust, Westach combo EGT and boost gages, oil temp gage.
We seem to be getting a lot of smoke at startup, higher Rpms are fine. EGT and Boost will be powered up today so I will temps tomorrow.
Thanks for any input
Tony K.

If you mean the black puff when you start the engine, that's normal. If you mean heavy smoke off the line, here's how to tune most of it out. Back the smoke screw out until it's flush with the inside of the cover so you aren't preloading the fuel pin. Run the star wheel up as high as it will go and still contact the ratchet mechanism. Take it for a drive and see how it is. If it's boggy in the midrange, run the star wheel back down until you find a setting you're happy with. I think that with the injectors you have it will still put out a puff and run strong cranked all the way up.
EGT's are probably pretty toasty and boost is probably 37 psi.

We will get on the pump adjustments over the holiday weekend. Do you feel the flowmaster 3.5" is large enough to support this level of engine mods? I am not going any further with engine mods other then I still have to put in the 3200 spring.
I am not impressed by the heartthrob turbo down pipe. It doesn't fit very well, hits the bell housing and doesn't seal very well at the turbo. I personally don't think it bent correctly. It's only slightly bigger the factory pipe. I am thinking of going back to factory. What are you using for a down pipe?

See how the EGT's are. If it's a play truck, you don't need to be able to keep it under 1200 all the time, you can peg the gauge for short bursts like a dragstrip pass and not kill it.
My downpipe is the alleged 3.5" from bigexhaust.com (which is actually 3").

Well so we finally got the EGT and boost gages hooked up. EGT are running 1100 MAX this is just banging through the gears. Truck pulls hard in the mid RPM range, smokes some when it pulls hard through the lower rpms in 2nd and 3rd.
Heartthrob exhaust downpipe just does not fit! Mike at heartthrob isn't being real helpfull. He keeps blaming my flowmaster exhaust. The flowmaster 3.5" fit the truck and factory downpipe perfect! As a matter of fact it was one of te cleanest, easiest exhaust installs ever.
