haha, I just learned today how to remove it. I just used a small chisel and hammer to loosen it, then used the 8mm nut on top to spin it out with a wrench. I ordered a VW unit, so I will find out if it works for sure, If so, I will post the part number..it was only ....56.00

Be carefull though this job would not be fun on the side of the road with the bracket still on the pump. Even with the bracket removed a crows foot wrench would be nice.
Well, that sound fairly uncomplicated. I may cut the top of the bracket off one day so I'll have better access to it. I'll have to get a crow's foot and keep it in my toolkit just for that purpose. Thanks for the info

HaHa! I guess that day is today. It started cutting out again on me yesterday. I'm now reviewing this thread and am about to go out and start on it. Wish me luck!

I'm now an official member of the "pull cable club" and I love it. No more worries about the solenoid cutting out and it only cost $6 for the remote control cable.

I will make any other 1st gen a pull cable the day I get it. When mine went out I was 60 miles from nowere. I like my pull cable less things to go wrong and you can take the keys out, lock the door and let it run while you run in the store an you dont have to let it cool down and you can leve the A/C or heat on.
