You will need to use the OD piston retainer from your case, it has the holes for the governor tubes that send pressure back to the governor. The RE's OD piston retainer block off those holes and send the pressure to the electronic governor in the VB
I was going to use my 518 OD unit. Is the OD piston in the front case and not the OD unit? Making notes, don't want to miss anything.

That's good to know. I'll have to look for one.

My friend sold the 47RE, but that is one transmission that seems to be more often available around here. Considering I will be using my A518 4X4 OD unit, does it mater if the 47RE I find is a 2 or 4wd?
At this point, it looks like the only part I will have to buy out of state is the valve body. $225 to 250 with shipping.
Going this route, I'm going to have around $1000 into the core. Add engine to trans adapter plate, torque converter, and rebuild kit will put this project at around $2500. Still cheaper than having a 47RH shipped up.

The OD piston retainer bolts to the back of the case, BUT the whole Trans has to come apart to get it out, it supports the rear drum which is held on with a snap ring.

2wd or 4wd, front case is the same.

I might have been wrong on the electrical connector, I'm going to go measure a bunch of my VB's. But I am positive that there is a bushing available

is there a good way to control the lockup I put a 47rh in my 92 the only time I use it is on the freeway. I just have a switch on the dash and a in line with a pressure switch on the transmission. but I don't like the way it works. if you forget to turn it off getting off the freeway it bucks coming up to a stop light and if you leave it on from the stop light 3-4 shift is very hard. ken

You can wire LU with relays so that when you hit the brakes it unlocks the converter!

If your PCM OD control still works, you can connect a time delay relay to the OD so a few seconds later the lockup would happen. If your OD control is manual like mine, you can still use the time delay relay. Something else I'm working on is a stand alone OD/lockup control using the TPS and a pressure sensor off the governor port.

Well, $750 for the internal parts to convert the 518. 1/3 of that being freight. Add the adapter plate at $250 brings it to $1000. Add an overhaul kit and a torque converter, that's another grand at least. Wouldn't be surprised if I have 3 grand + into it by the time I'm done.

Apparently you can put a pressure switch in the front servo test port (the one all the way forward on the right side) to control lock up. That port only has pressure when the transmission is in 3rd or OD. That will at least eliminate the "forgetting to turn it off" part. Momentarily interrupting LU for 3-4 shift will take a little more thought.

I bought some of my parts off Ebay fairly cheap.

I wired my L/U to the O/D wire with a toggle in line so I can turn the L/U off if I'm forced to drive right at that 32-35 MPH range. Otherwise there is a slight delay from O/D to when it locks up. It does sound like a Getrag when slowing down around 30 MPH until it unlocks but it's not a big deal.

I also moved the O/D off button to the column shifter so I can easily kick it out if I want to accelerate and it doesn't want to down shift.

That's where those prices came from. You forget I live in Alaska and they bite us hard on shipping.

Found a possible doner 47RH 4X2 in a junk yard. It has 350K miles on it and they want $900 for it. Leary about the miles and the price.

Well, it lasted that long. You are going to overhaul it anyway right?

Right, but I think I may have found a 47RH 4X4 diesel trans. I'll know more when the guy gets back to his shop. He went fishing (aka playing hooky).
