Transmission woes

Hey everyone. I have been out of the country for 4 months and haven't been on here longer than that.
While I was gone, my wife was driving my truck and said all of a sudden, it started making a whining noise. She made it home and I told her just to park it until I get back from Chile. Well, I cranked it up today,(fired right up). In drive or reverse, with foot on brake not moving, it whines allright. Sounds like something in the tranny is trying to lock up. It will untrack but I shut it down to hopefully stop any more damage. There is a small bit of fluid on ground under bell housing area. (It has not leaked before). I know this is probably not a lot to go on, but any help will be appreciated.

Oh yea, the transmission has not given me any sign of problem before other than the good ol' TPS problems.

It may not be in the transmission, it may be the torque converter flex plate.
check the TQ seal.........your flex plate may have been cracked for awhile and finaly broke!!

Maybe look up into the TQ inspection plate or cover and see if the is metal pieces in there.

Ok. Is this inspection plate the same as the dust cover over the torque converter? Will I be able to see if the flex plate is cracked without pulling tranny? I feel a little better knowing it MIGHT not be as serious and costly as a transmission.

Well I have read a bunch of post on here as well as some other sites and will tackle the job starting Tuesday. Regardless of theproblem, I know the tranny will have to be pulled. I have a few weeks off work so I can take my time. I read somewhere about putting in a 2nd gen flex plate. Any other mods that would be a good idea while I have it apart, yall chime in and let me know. Thanks for the input so far.

If you got the coin, a better TQ will put it to the ground and a valve body to make shore it gets there.

Ok it may have took me two weeks to get to it but I got the transmisson pulled today. The flexplate looks fine and I havent took the torque converter off the transmission but it looks fine too. The filter was not plugged but there was a thin film of sludge in the bottom of the pan and a couple of tiny pieces that a magnet would pick up. The filter and oil was changed a few thousand miles ago. I guess now the next step is to find a good transmission guy here. Anyone know of one in the Corpus Christi area that won't stick it to me? Or any suggestions on anything else I might look for?

Most flexplate cracks are not plain to see. Upgrade to a 94+ Cummins/Dodge flexplate and be done with it. Often times a cracked flexplate will walk the tq converter in and out, making the seal ride against a different area, resulting in the leak you were seeing. Your budget is the limit with the auto tranny buildup. You may want to put a rear main seal in the engine while its this far down...

I think that is what I will do with the flex plate. Just need to find a reputable transmission place in this area.
While I have it down I need to also replace the seal on my transfer case. Anyone know how much backlash between in and out shafts?
