Transmission upgrade questions
Transmission upgrade questions
Does anyone have reccomendations on a good line of shift kits? I see one in the classifieds, but I never got a response. I believe it was a Transgo. Any other brands? Is upgrading the valve body entirely an option? Also, with the install of the shift kit, was there a positive difference? One more question: Increasing the line pressure of the tranny. Is this a must do? I know from electronically controlled transmissions of the newer trucks increasing the line pressure helps with firm shifts, and the reason I ask is that I have never heard of anyone here increasing the line pressure for the A518's.
I'm looking into ugrading my auto , I also not claiming to be a trans rebuilder , I've done a few , but stayed with general repair , considered AT trans building a speicalty , never had the space & time .
But on to your ??? , basicly yes to all , I'm hooked on trying to get the best for the money & use [ my truck is not my hobby ] so just enough trans to help to keep me from getting stranded .
My plan is to get Dave Goerand ,or Goerands Trans Iowa , to build mine .
some stuff he builds himself like Torque Converters [ it sounds like you want to build your own ] so I would suggest getting one from one of the builders [ Dave ] form what I've come across , thats the weakest point in these trans , not that more pressure & a valve body is not a good mod , but there again I seem to remember that he modifies an after market valve body , & a bunch of other tricks that he's learned .
I would like not to put $2,500-3,500 into a trans , by doing myself , but by the time I get the parts , at the very least $1,000 + , then the possibilty of needing a tow from the boonies $500+ , it seems like good insurance .
This can be a hot topic , so I'm sure you'll hear from others .

What is a good t/c for the 1st gens? The po had the tranny rebuilt in mine and it shifts great!! However, the engine needs to turn a few rpms before it'll start moving. Once I get a tach I'll see where the stall speed is at but it seems a little high.
I know there's a lot of them out there, what's the best one for the money?
The pump has been tweaked a little.

Its back to to Georands again , when your ready give him a call tell him what your trying to do and he will make what you need , this is going to the guy that makes them so your more likly to get what you want , unlike a parts house , some of the other names you may see may make them also , but Dave is my choise .
I'm probubly spelling his name wrong .

My TC is already upgraded. I went with the BD line. No, I am asking about valve body upgrades and /or shift kit links, and experiences of those that have had these done. Also, increasing the line pressure on our trannies. What are the benefits, if any, from those that have increased their pressures?
The increased line pressure will hold the power better. When I got my trans rebuilt with the parts in my sig, it was amazing. I can feel/hear the shifts now and it doesn't slip in OD nearly as much. It made the whole truck more driveable, faster too
.
We need to have a northern cal first gen gathering and you can take a ride in my goerend equipped truck.

Back on the line pressure: Any ideas on how many turns on the line pressure screw were done? I believe the FSM says counter clockwise to increase line pressure.
