Transmission question
Transmission question
How much bombing can I do before the transmission has to be upgraded?
Right now I have a 727 with the overdrive. 354 gears. 4 wheel Drive not sure which transfer case.
I want to add 16 CM housing, 190 injectors, old Smokey power pen.
I've heard the transmission is the weak link. But they are good transmissions if you don't overpower them is that correct. From what I've been reading a quality transmission $3500. That is out of my budget for this vehicle.
I'd like to say thank you. To anybody that replies.

The A518 (a 727 with an overdrive
) is a decent transmission but can be greatly improved on. Like anything else, maintenance and driving style will have a lot to do with how reliable they are.
When we pulled mine down last year (had a little more metal in the pan than I liked seeing) everything looked great. The truck had around 70k miles at the time, and the previous owner used it to tow his 5th wheel. The pan had never been off when I bought the truck with 47k miles, so even with poor maintenance and heavy towing it held up fine.
I have since done some mild tweaks to the pump, installed a 16cm housing, BHAF, and 4" exhaust. I tow frequently, often close to the "max" weight rating, and so far I haven't had any issues with the transmission.
Unless your trans is already weak, I doubt you will have any problems with your planned mods as long as you keep the heat down and don't abuse it frequently.

I agree with Dan. It is a good tranny. But like anything else for anything. Just watch what you do with it (temp, regular maint) and don't abuse it. It will probably last a long time. But I think a lot of people decide to upgrade the tranny if it does happen to go on them. Be it from modifing the motor, towing a lot of weight, not regular maintence or just happen to have a tranny that was not up to specs from a previous owner. I know with mine, since I needed to replace it any ways, why not go with a better product (dtt, ats or others).
I had to do a rebuild last year. With most of the mods below I broke one part. The small lever that controls the 1ST to 2ND shift.
I guess its a common part to break.
I did not know how many total miles were on the tranny so we rebuilt it while it was out.
Things to spend good money on.
Make sure you get a top quailty rebuild kit they include better friction plates, bushings and bearing.
Spend the most amount of money you can on a good touque converter. The better converter you buy the better MPG you will get and your tranny will love it.
Just my .os cents
