Angry Johnny will be the the one to answer this one, but I think you also need the output shaft from a 4wd tranny as well as the 4wd OD tail section?

You can swap them but you need to make sure it's an RH as the RE won't have a governor. Additionally you will need the diesel governor. The diesel O/D also has heavier duty planetaries and more discs. If you have a gasser O/D unit just use the output shaft and housing from it and swap all the other stuff from your diesel 2WD unit.

You can just unbolt the O/D unit and take it off. The parking pawl rod is the only PITA. It has to have the pawl fully engaged in order for the rod to slip past it.

After that you are going to need a press of some sort to get the direct clutch discs out to continue to disassemble it to change the output shaft. You might want to consider just taking both units to a transmission shop and having them swap out the components.

This truck has some sort of aftermarket transmission cooler under the bed on the driver side do you happen to know anything about them

There were factory add on coolers like that back in the day. It's a good option to have, I believe it was called the super cooler. I don't recall ever installing any of them.
