Transmission Problems
Could be the reverse servo spring retainer blown out, or the band adjustment. Drop the oil and pan and inspect the adjustment. Loosen lock nut, tighten adjuster screw to 72 lbin tight (strong wrist tight approx) and then back it out 2 turns and tighten lock nut.
I know this is a stupid question but, the 2 turns that u are supposed to back it off, that's 720 degrees right?
I have the no reverse problem also. I dropped the pan yesterday AMD found the strut laying there which, from what I've read is caused by
1. Low- reverse band being tolose
2. A broken low reverse band.
I adjusted the band's 1 yr/12,000 miles ago per the FSM and it seemed when I did, after backing the screw out the 2 turns, it seemed way to lose. Although I dont mess with automatics , so I don't know.

Yes, 720 degrees, but you could try 1 3/4 turns 630 degrees.
point 1 - correct
point 2 - easily remove broken band
To replace the rear/reverse band is a complete teardown.
Buy an overhaul book! The rebuild is not very difficult if you have the time.

Thanks for the information. I tried to adjust it but i think the band is broke. The Reverse leveler/ arm is lose and floats up an down not even touching the spring and plunger.
Could have burnt up the direct clutches also, since they are applied in reverse. But if there is as much play as you describe the band itself is possibly broken. The early 518s with the narrow band are a common failure among plow trucks, because of the constant reverse, drive, reverse, drive, reverse etc etc in the event someone gets stuck and tries to get out.
