Trans Question

I bought a vehicle with a 1993 cummins and 46RH in it. The trans was rebuilt ~5000 miles ago. I am wanting to increase the power and fuel economy. I know that getting more power is easy. What would be the recommended transmission setup? Will a tighter converter help with economy by putting more power to the ground? Should I just sell the trans and do a 47rh swap to gain the lock up converter since I have to pull it anyway to put a different converter in? It will always be loaded heavy, but will not be driven a whole lot. The 47rh swap seems like a moderately hard swap, but if lockup will only get me 0.5 mpg or less it is not worth it. I will have a combined weight of ~16,000-20,000 at all times.

Your best bet to get mpg and save money is just put a tighter converter in the 46rh and throw a shift kit in there while you have it out. Now if you have a bunch of money burning a hole in your pocket then I would say either switch to a 5 speed or a 47rh.

Thanks for the response. Is Goerend my best bet for the converter and shift kit? Anyone else agree/disagree with this approach?

I would say yes. Georend has a far superior product compared to say TCI and such. You are going to pay more but it will be worth it. The shift kit you can get from anywhere they are all pretty much the same.

Yea Someone just put 425HP through Goerends $550 converter.

Getting a hold of him on the phone is hard because he's busy, but leave messages.

He can also make you a custom valve body for your trans to match the converter, Or you could go the cheap route and put in a $125 transgo shift kit.

if your going to be towing 16-20K i would really recommend the 47rh conversion. I have the tightest version of Goerends converters in mine and when hauling only 6500-7000 pounds (certainly not necessary to have the converter locked at this weight) i am so glad i have the ability to hit the lock up button. This past weekend I hauled a buddy's tractor to a job site that grossed 17k (according to him). It made me smile when i hit the lockup switch. I felt the power just slipping away with it unlocked. My trans temps never got above 180 with the converter locked and climbing some pretty nice grades while pulling his tractor.
