Trans. lock-up ???

New problem, "NEW" post. Finally finished the 3rd.member install (all new gears & bearings), Truck would not move ?????, Dropped drive line, jack-up wheels off ground, ck'd for binding, nope, turned free no sounds or binding. Checked trans., fluid, a little lite brown, not burnt. Put trans in "R" mtr. loaded down, same in all positions.
I have never had any problems w/ my trans, pushed OD off, didn't help. "She's locked-up". Please feel free to ask questions or give opinions. I think this a 46HR/ 518A, D250 91.5, all stock no mods.
This is the only place for me to find answers (and corrective guidance) for those who'v been their done that. OK, i'v quit throwing tools, kicking dirt, and talking bad (didn't help anyway).

N"other pot of coffee, whosdunit.

Does it feel like it shifts into Reverse or Drive? or does it feel like nothing happens?
Checked your shifter linkage on the trans?

Dev.
You can feel it go to each position but does not "grab" (for lack of better word) but will ck the linkage. A friend asks if the trans TC has lock-up (i don't know enough to yet to say yes or no), w/o the drive shaft & in dr. if feels like you have the emergency brakes locked.

more coffee, whosdunit

Hey Dev., after reading and looking at videos i think my problem may be my torque converter, just a WAG , what you think? I'm going up to drain fluid and remove some of the cross braces and will try to find a trans jack.

then more coffee, whosdunit.

With the drive shaft removed, does the output shaft of the trans turn freely in neutral?

Thanks cougar, no sir, w/ engine running, and tail shaft in any gear, tail shaft won't turn either. Pulled the trans pan fluid burnt & filter filthy but only drove 8 miles last trip, everything seemed normal, smooth shifting no noises or acting up, stopped in driveway would not move, felt like the emergency brake was locked on.

more coffee, whosdunit.

SAND! SAND!!! now how did sand get in my trans?? I believe she's done for, unknown millage when i bought her, drove her about 9yrs, kept the fluid & filter changed, been setting up for just over a year, it took me that long to save up the money for the rearend parts. I would like to thank everyone for your help and answers.

coffee time, whosdunit.

I've seen all kinds of interesting things in engines and transmissions in an attempt to make them work long enough to unload them on some poor unsuspecting fool. In your case though, it is probably from a poorly located vent tube. The 47RH I bought from a "reputable" dealer was not only junk, but the wrong configuration, V10 vs Cummins. It burned up the bands and clutches just moving it a couple hundred feet. This "reputable" dealer wouldn't even stand behind his work claiming all "off the shelf" overhauled drivetrain components aren't covered by their warranty. One very expensive transmission.

cougar, not going the rebuild route. I am looking in to remanufactured W/ guaranteed warranty. Thinking about selling this one as i have a d350 i use a lot. Trying to decide to sell w/ new trans or as is, she's a better than average truck.
I know about being ripped off, always leaves a bad taste & builds distrust, i always refused to let someone else work on my trucks, it's not that i didn't trust them," i just didn't trust'm". Then i did, just once, and now i "are here"!!!.
I did all the work building my new rearend w/ the instructions from a retired mech. who has done hundreds of Dana 70's he checked all phases of my work, when finished, he said it was correct and a very good job.
IF i decide to replace the trans. myself, (taking out & installing) i will find a hands- on pro. to instruct me, same as before, if it is wrong it's on me. Coming here folks give me helpful do's & don'ts.

Decision, Decisions, makes me need more "COFFEE," whosdunit.

Was telling a feller about my 91 trans locking up, "HE", said it was the "park spring" inside the trans.?? It won't let the trans move into any gear, anyone know what he is referring to ?

He may be referring to what is called the comb. IIRC it is a stamped sheet metal piece with like a saw tooth edge on it inside the trans. Do a search or check the FAQs. I believe this subject has been mentioned in the past.
