Towing mirrors for 1st gen.
Towing mirrors for 1st gen.
For those of you who tow - probably most - what mirrors are you using? I have those black slip on **** mirrors which work but I don't like, too many different mirrors - the originals, convex stick-on and the little ****. It's just too much for my feeble mind and eyes, plus I'd like a mirror that sticks out farther to see past my travel trailer better.
Thanks
Thanks

I have the slip on type also and they extend far enough for my Bigfoot camper. For a while I put up with the vibration but then I ran a short beed of silicon on all four sides. What a difference. Just had to make sure they were properly adjusted before the silicon treatment
Re:Towing mirrors for 1st gen.
I'm running the temporary McKesh mirrors that mount with a strap to the doors. I like the fact that they are a full size mirror, and you can push them out past the original mirrors. I heard somewhere that the law in some states says you have to be able to see an object 200 feet behind you in your mirrors. I couldn't do that easily without extending them a long way. This means they do vibrate quite a bit. I'm now thinking of installing permanent mirrors that mount to the doors with three tubular legs, and which you can swing out when towing and swing back when not. I saw them in a JC Witney catalog. Has anyone ever put these on, and do they work as well as I'm thinking they should?
Re:Towing mirrors for 1st gen.
I'm thinking of putting on a set of west coast mirrors on. I was thinking of removing the stock mirrors but leaving the part that is mounted to the door. I was also thinking of using the motorized mirrors and hooking them up to the ome mirror adjustment switch. I pull a 30' fifthwheel, Dutchman classic.
Re:Towing mirrors for 1st gen.
I've thought about temporary ones. I had a '78 PW with the three-point mount on the door - problem with those is if you catch anything with them you'll make a mess outa your door! Does anyone make an extendable "big rig" style mirror. Some of the newer trucks have nice tow mirrors, such as the Stuperduty Furd. I don't want mirrors that hang out there a mile full time, I don't tow that often!

Uh oh! I hadn't thought about that! I've suddenly gone off the idea. I like mirrors that fold back.

As I have been cruising up and down I-80 to work and back I have been checking out big rig mirrors. I've seen some real slick ones but they're HUGE! The old style big rig mirrors could work (are these the "west coast" style?) but I doubt that anyone makes them with an extendable mirror head. Also, if you hit anything with them something will bend and/or break.
Re:Towing mirrors for 1st gen.
The mirrows are the ones on the big rigs, the old style. I get them at a truck supply. You can get powered ones if you want to spend the extra money and heated ones also. I used to have them on my 83 chevy before it burned up when I was towing a gooseneck stock trailer. I love them. I use to drive a big truck after I had retired from the Army. Oh yea, you can put the big spots on them too and that will help with some of that blind spots.
