I live in BC Canada in the mountains. The area that I live in has lots of mountain passes and steep hills (10-12 % grades)

My non ic 91 w250 has overheated when towing from the day that I got it. I purchased a new stock radiator for it and it didn't help at all. Total waste of money. I had a baffle put in the top tank to distribute the flow better in the radiator and that didn't help at all ether. Another total waste of money. Checked fan clutch, changed thermastat, and in general went over the entire cooling system and nothing helped. The rad is just too small and a poor design.

I was about to sell the truck and move on when I found a custom made aluminum radiator on the web. It was expensive, but it would bolt right in to my truck with no moding. I took the plunge and bought it for my truck. Easy install. To test it I pulled my 27 ' TT up the Trail hill. 10% grade for 6 kms. Before I change the rad the temp gauge would go straight to the H and I would have to pull over and let things cool down. With the new rad the temp stayed below 1/2 on the gauge. The fan clutch didn't even engage.

Although, $900 is quite steep.

 

For a maxed design counter flow coil and a custom metal shroud. Sounds reasonable to me.

A properly designed counter flow coil can have exit air that's hotter than the water leaving the coil. It takes bigger tubes because the individual water circuits are 2 or 3 passes through the assembly.

Just installed a Mishimoto unit in my '93. It is a bit cheaper from a vendor of your choice (versus buying direct) but are about double the cost of the Spectra unit. Whatever your experience with Spectra, I think a high quality, more durable unit with increased cooling capacity is worth the investment. Easy bolt-in part, works flawlessly, and really improves the looks of the engine bay.

I need a new radiator. present one is starting to leak, but fully functional. It got pretty hot pulling the train through the Rockies. Neither it nor the spare I bought is worth attempting repair. Stock recore or replacement is about $380. The Mishimoto looks good to me.

Yeah, that is the correct number. You're looking at about $600 from an a vendor. Interestingly my temp seems more stable now, warms up seemingly more quickly and then stays put even under load, A/C on, and warm ambient.

 

Better radiator wouldn't speed up warmup, but rinsing the crud out at the same time, and maybe a fresh thermostat would do it.

Most of my kids live West of the Rockies. I've taken one trip out there, going through 5 or 6 high passes. A couple of them required a rest near the top to let the engine cool down. Transmission and differential temps stayed under 200°, quite comfortable with synthetic lubes. I'm looking for a well centered needle going uphill pulling the double.

Radiator's ordered. Going to get after the KDP and water pump while I'm under the hood.
