has anyone tinted there windows before? i wanna try, someone said to use baby shampoo so i can smooth it out nicer, can someone tell me how to go about tiniting windows and how the numbers work? dont they go by % so say 15% is how much light is let in? or how much it blocks? anyway hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. thanks Gregg

 

I applied tint to a Dodge Daytona years ago. It wasn't a hard job, but for all the more it cost, if I had to do it over again I'd just take it someplace that does the tinting. But, that car was probably harder than a truck would be, so go ahead and give it a try.
The kit that I used said to use dishsoap to put on the windows first, then you lay the film over the window and have time to get it straight and squeegee out the bubbles that get trapped. Just follow the instructions that come with the tint and you'll be fine. You'll need an X-Acto knife or a single-edge razor blade, soap (dish or shampoo or something similar), and of course the film.
You might want to talk to someone locally to see if there are any restrictions on the tint you're allowed to apply. Some places don't have any laws in their immediate area, yet the county next to you might be real strict about it, and can make life miserable for you.
The higher the number, the darker the tint.

I've done mine. If its your first time, you will have bubbles in it. Ive done mine 2 times and tried my ex's window once. Our glass is a lot flatter that hers was. I never could get hers to work. When I got my truck it had that old purple tint and there is nothing i hate worse than purple tint. I did the back the first time 20% and that wasn't dark enough. re did it at 2 1/2% I still have bubbles in it and the cuts around the outside aren't perfect but it will work for me. I did my side windows the first say I had to turn on my ac this year. The first window has a few bubbles in it but I'm happy with it, the driver's side, the wind caught it and f ed it up so... I left it on because all this is temp. till i get the new felt pad things at the bottom of the window and get them all redone by a pro. the numbers are supposed to be the amount of light it lets in. my ex's car I had done at 20% on the sides and 5% on the side windows that don't roll down and the back. We got a ticket and took the sides off, should have just paid the ticket. they law down here is 35% on sides and no limit on windows that don't roll down. trooper said hers was 1% which was a crock of crap but oh well.

It just depends on how picky you are. The first time i used a old hotel key and a paper towel as a squeegee and it scratched it a bit, i bought the rubber kit the 2nd time worked a lot better. just use lots of soap and water on both sides of the tint.

 

I don't think you had purple tint. What I think you had was cheap tint that turned purple over time.

 

I tinted mine about 6 months ago and so far so good, alittle time and a whole lot of cuss words and you will get it done, do not use shampoo use that adhesive that they sell it makes it 50 times easier, i have tried it with soap and shampoo and it would never come out right, i did 5% on my rear window and 20% on my side windows and it is nice, take your vent windows out to tint them and they are easy.

 

Dont do it unless you have lots of time so you are not in a hurry. It is best with two people, the girlfriend was a huge help for me. Make sure everything is clean including your finger tips, no dust anywere, and do it in an area with real good light, it is so hard to see a bubble until it gets into the sunlight, then you see all kinds of bubbles and it looks like crap.

Clean your window with a razor blade then wash it good without any solvents. when puting on the tint use lots and lots of water spray, soak everything, both sides of the film and the entire window area. if your not sure then add more spray.

Use a small squeegee and follow the directions, then watch and wait to smooth out bubbles when they creep up from the edges. be sure it is cut away from the edges so it doesnt touch the sides or it will lift up. once the glue gets tackey the film will stick and stop lifting.

I was disapointed with the 5% on back should have done 2.5% and I wish the 20% on the sides were a bit darker too.

If your glass is in good shape and not pitted, then I would get some prices from a pro, by the time you buy the tint for the back and sides, then screw up a cut and have to buy another roll, that along with all the time to get it just right, it may be best to have someone else do it. then when it looks bad you can take it back and tell them to fix it.

Oh and DO NOT roll down the window for a day until it is all set up, that will tick you off and cost you another roll to do it over again.

 

Ive tinted over 30 cars. Just make sure you dont have any little dangling slivers of window tint floating around that are still sort of connected to the windows...because the first time you roll the window down with it like that it will peel your tint off/ crinkle it

btw. Use dawn dish soap. one table spoon per 20 ounces of WARM water. Thats how all most all pro tint shops do it
