Timing

Ok, I've been giving some thought to bumping the timing. My truck is a daily driver I can't break anything. It's got a 40 horse fuel pin and the power screw is turned a little. Cold air intake also. Is bumping the timing going to hurt anything? What am i going to gain? Also any other little CHEAP tricks for power and mileage? Thank y'all

I thought about it awhile and finally bumped mine last night. So far im really glad i did it. Truck seems a lot snappier to me than it did set at the stock level. I guess ill know a lot more after i check the mileage again. I was already gettin about 22 and im really interested in seeing if it gets better. I really don't think you will hurt anything going an 1/8 like they say too.

You Won't.

Nope

What am i going to gain?
1 maybe 2 Miles Per Gallon gain. Quieter engine, Better Throttle response,Maybe a lil more smoke,More fun

Also any other little CHEAP tricks for power and mileage?
3200 Governor spring is one of the best mods for a first gen, 15$ part but few hours to install.

Well I am not sure how to put all the details on there, but.....its a 93 D350 with 225000 miles. Its got a bully dog power pin, custom cold air intake, power screw turned a little (not sure how much...it was done when I got it), 4:10 gears with a 5 speed. Painted inferno red pearl last summer.

After I resealed my pump last week I went and bumped the timing 1/8" as I was reinstalling it.

After putting on about 100 miles the next day I went out and moved it back to stock.
I did not like the way it felt I actually felt like I had less power than I did before.

I lost about 10 pounds of boost and it felt like I had less bottom end power.

But there may be different issues with mine because I am still trying to figure out why I cannot hear my turbo even in an underpass.

I think I might still have a fuel issue because it just feels like I run out of power and no fuel wound make no heat to turn the turbo.

Maybe in all of the times I had my pump apart I got the fuel screw out farther than it should be for my baseline and I now have less fuel than when I stared, I haven’t had the time to get under the hood for the last few days to play with the pump.

You will lose boost when you advance the timing (and that can be a good thing if you are pushing 40 psi), and advancing the timing shifts the power curve higher in the RPM range. I'd bump the timing back up and turn the fuel screw in some more.

My timing is advanced about a day to a day and a half. My boost on a dyno might go to 38 psi and I can crank out close to 400 RWHP, mileage is good - 18+ city and and 22+ highway. This is with a truck that rolls over the scales at 7000+. Noise will go up slightly, EGTs down and performance should go up. As Wannadiesel said - turn your full power screw in and this should help your power.

I didn't notice any drop in boost at all. Does that mean i didn't go far enough? I'm pretty sure i went somewhere between a 1/16 and an 1/8. Pump was replaced right before i bought the truck so who knows where it was at.

timing was the first mod i did because it was free. and it made a huge difference really a great gain and better throttle response i have been debating on whether or not going farther with it.

But really you can only up the timing just a fraction of a turn, is that right, you can only rotate the pump until the screws you loosened are touching the other side of the grooves it lookes like?,

I noticed a throttle response jump. The sound of my idle did change however. Seems a tad bit louder at times. Other times it sounds ok. I dont know about mileage. Even though that was what I was going for, I havent been able to get a full tank to check it around town.

But the truck does seem to have more 'git' to its up'n'go.

Im still meaning to make a quick little video showing how to do it but weather aint been cooperating with me and Im also unsure how to film/produce it.
