Throttle Re-Indexing after 3200 Spring

I have another thread about some problems I have had but I'm making a new one for better exposure.

I got everything back on and the throttle indexed to where it was when I took it off. First start it idles at about 2500. I have adjusted it every way I can going one notch at a time and I mean the little notches on the shaft not the lines. If I turn it clockwise I can finally find a good idle but as soon as I put it in drive it will idle down very low or die. If I go back the other way the farther I go the higher it idles when I start it.

Everything is correct other than that, I did remove the fuel screw during the install and I put it back where it was. The idle screw is also in the same position as was before the install.

What is causing it to do this? The part that confuses me is that when I index it to where it was originally, the idle is very high.

You could have it 180 degrees out.

I did replace the o-ring on the throttle shaft while I was doing it. If it is 180 out did I put the throttle shaft back in wrong?

I just took the top off an old pump I have here to see if it could be put in wrong, and I don't see how it could.
I read somewhere it could be 180 out, but I can't see how.
sorry , my bad.
Maybe the tophat/spring aren't together right?

Mine does the same thing after putting in the gov spring. Quite annoying, especially when you drop it into drive with the a/c on and it dies on ya. Most of the time mine just idles really low. (idles great in park, but once put into drive it drops to like 500-700 rpm range)

One thing I think I noticed differently is the lever on the side of the pump doesn't stop the truck like before. I vaguely remember it almost immediately shutting the truck down prior to changing springs, but now the truck is like, ugh, I guess I can shut down and the rpms slow down until finally cutting off.

Something had to have happened because when the throttle was indexed where is was originally, it idles at 2500 rpm.

Why not index it to where it was originally and turn down the idle screw?

Its common to have to adjust the idle screw after the install.

If I do that to where the idle is right, When I put it in gear It will barely idle or die. If I put it where it was I can't get the idle low enough.

Ditto.

I've re-indexed mine and adjusted the idle screw pretty much every way possible and it still does the same thing.

I'm wondering if the manual shutdown lever isn't in the right spot. i'd pull the top and double check everything goes on right. in the write up in the stickys the one lever must be in the right spot. I'd double check it.

What about the full power lever?? did you remove the screw to put the top back on??? just throwing ideas out there.

So I have mine apart as well. Not seeing anything obviously out of place.

The one thing I did need to fix is I had lost my top hat spring originally so I had a spring in there that I thought was close to what it used to be. It is a little bit heavier as it turns out, but I don't know if that is the cause of the problem. If it works like I think it does looking at diagrams from the sticky, the heavier spring shouldn't have made much of a difference.

When I say heavier, it is just slighter thicker wire. It isn't like I used a suspension spring in there or something

Well I took it back apart and got it running fine now. I think the tophat was the cause of all my problems. When I put it on the first time I put it through the washer then the spring last. I was looking at pictures of the tophat online and saw that it's supposed to go spring first then the washer.

The truck runs great now, I couldn't believe that the little tophat could cause those problems.

Thanks for all the help.

Gots_a_sol you should definitely check what I have posted here. I don't know if the spring length/tension could cause many problems but if it's not put together right it will.
