thinking of going to a tall skinny(ish) winter tire this winter. anyone running something narrow but in the 33" tal range?

if so can you post your tire size and brand

 

A 255/85R16 is what I run year round and it is 33" tall and about 9.5 wide. BFG's mud terrain wear fairly good for allaround use

 

I've had the BFG All Terrain on 3 vehicles and have loved them on all of them. However, once you get to 33" they get wider. I am also running the 255/85 Mud Terrrains on my dually, but have not done snow yet... we'll see. It won't be a good comparisson because the dually anyway.

Good luck finding more than 3 different 255/85 series though! Not many choices in that size range.

 

I'll be running Dunlop 245/75/16 blackwalls on my 1st gen for the snow this year.

Loaded up the bed with 240# of sand and 45' of 1" bottom chain from a boat mooring

 

9.00R16 Michelin Militarys with a Bandag cap. They are 36"x9" and I siped the centers for ice.

 

34/9/16 TSL's up front and 34/10.5/16 LTB's in the back with chains = Unstoppable

I like Mastercraft Courser MSR's. This year I got some Firestone Winterforce tires for the tonner.

Seems to do great in the snow. - The chains and that adjusted reversed reciprocating dinglearm must help too!

 

The choices for 255/85/16s are getting slimmer everyday.

Another option would be 255/80/17s mounted on 3rd gen wheels.
Identical height to the 16s.

But again, not many choices.

How many sets of tires do you have?? I always enjoy seeing your pics.

 

I ran STA (Specialty Tires of America) Superlugs for 2 years. They were 9.00 x 16, this is a 36" tall tire with a 9" wide tread. Very tall and very skinny. They were a biased-ply tire. They were a great tire and pretty inexpensive if you do not spend a ton of time on the highway, not really meant for that. I was like you, tried to find the tallest thing out there that I can stuff under my un-lifted truck. These did fit because they were so narrow. (https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...1&d=1258381676)
I just mounted a new set of Treadwright 265/75 R16 Guard Dog M/T. I have about 1000 miles on them now and I absolutely love them and hard to beat the price.

 

I am running 265/75/16s now; these are the tires in this size I have a hard time finding a bad review.

I run 285/75R/16s on my truck. They are Republic (goodyear brand) Trail Mark M/S Radials. They have good, mean tread, get good traction, and are very quiet on the road. I picked them up for $169 a tire installed, balanced, stemmed, and everything from my local goodyear dealer. This is my 2nd set of these.

 

Im running 285/75/16 cooper stt's. This will be there first winter. We'll see how they do.

 

I know its not a 1st gen, but I run 235/85R16 Blizzacks on my truck in the winter. I run 285/70R17 Vatiiva's in the summer. 235's are about 31" high, but lots of choices in that size.
