Tail gate fallin off???

Has anyone ever seen this before? I went to open my tail gate the other day and it wanted to pull away, found the right side pivot point gone. Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else. Looks like I will have to fab something!!

Thumbs down It's A Dodge Thing

I have to open a bejillion tail-gates, each day, loading and unloading tires that need repair/replacement.

By far the worst to fall off, or not open, or not close, or be bent all to oblivion, are the ones on the 1st Gen. Dodge body style, from about 1973 to 1993.

dodgerdoob,
Did you fab your own to fix it or can you get it from the dealer and then weld it in?

I just wish mine had a tailgate. If you don't have one, it can't fall off.

Hi All,
I had to fab my own and weld it on. Seems to be a really weak area on these trucks.

Mine did the same, I just cleaned up the area with a grinder and welded it back on. I thought it was going to harder than it was. Just make sure the areas are pretty clean of rust and paint and take your time. I will try to shoot some photos of my repair...

When I converted my 91 to a dually, the dually bed I bought had a repair done. A simple piece of pipe was welded on in place of the post. Simple and strong.

When mine fell off on the 92 the only tubing I could find with the right OD (small town living is a PITA for hardware) was an old piece of exhaust tubing from my case 220's original Kohler 10 hp I had lying in the junk pile. Now that is bubba'ing !! Still working great for the new owner I might add.

I had the corresponding piece on the tailgate fall off, welded it back on. It's kinda ugly but it hasn't fallen off again.

When I got my truck the drivers side already had the repair and the 3rd time I opened the gate the pass broke out. I just cleaned it up and rewelded it.
