Swiss Cheese Airbox?

Is the "Swiss cheese airbox" just when people cut holes in their stock airbox?

What are the advantages to running it like that? Disadvantages?

Will I be able to hear the turbo better?

Thank you

Yes, exactly. Advantages are better air flow through the filter. Yes the turbo will be louder. No dissadvantages that i can think of. Other than your air box looks like swiss cheese. I cut an opening in the front of mine, leaving the stock air tube from the radiator support to the air box intact. Left the back of the box intact to "trap" air behind the filter, if that's possible.

What are the advantages to running it like that? Potentially more air flow. Disadvantages? While it is possibly allowing more volume of air, it also allows just that much hot air. Hot air being thinner than cool air, you're not reaching the full potential advantages of the denser charge.

Will I be able to hear the turbo better? Yes.

Thank you
The factory stock/OEM air filter housing is actually a TRUE 100% cold air intake system. It pulls from just behind the passenger's head light assembly (least my '93 did). The bottleneck is the factory intake muffler. It's what amounts to the duct that connects the filter box to the headlight area. It's baffled to hush the turbo sound. As such, it's more restrictive to air flow as compared to a straight/open pipe.

I removed the factory muffler and whittled things out so as to install what amounts to a large funnel.

It worked very well for what it was.

Hope this helps.
