Swapping A DRW Dana70 for a Bad SRW DANA 70

I am about to do this swap but want to double check with the experts..... (I am a long time lurker and reader of the sight but haven’t really posted before)

I have done a lot of searching and it appears everything works out …Right?

I have a 91.5 W250 and I am thinking about swapping the rear of a 92 w350 with the same gearing

Okay quick back story.....the special little lock clip on my the hub nut broke and everything backed off while going down the road.... extremely sucky.... worse part is that as the axle was ejecting itself it split the rear spindle in half...

My options

Junkyard axle I looked at the three junk yards in my area every Saturday for three week and couldn't find anything

Repair spindle by chopping it off and re welding all est. where in excess of a $1000

I called about 10 different salvage yards only found one axle back east and by the time i got it here it would be over 1000

Searched Craig’s list for weeks and came up empty handed. However found a plethera of dully axles... so i picked one up for 300

From what i read i will have to switch the wheel studs but that seems reasonable

The perches are in the correct spot

The axle is 6" longer overall ... that is 3” wider per side... however the original 91.5 W250 rear axle seats inboard by 2" in comparison to the front wheels on each side ... thus if i run a dully axle with the SRW it will sit 1" out from the front wheels and be barely noticeable and still within the fenders…. Right?

What else should i be concerned about?

Thank you for the help

Im just guessing on this but, if it is your intent to keep it a SRW why can't you take the backing plates, for the brakes, off your old axle and transfer the the hubs with the drums to the DRW axle you are planning to use? A good friend of mine had an 89 Chevy DRW that did the same as yours did and the hubs and break parts were still usable. Then you are just using the housing and gears from the new axle and you don't have to mod the new one.

Actually, the folks that want to run the 3rd gen wheels on a 1st gen have put dually axles under their trucks to get the wheels to fit better, as they tend to sit too close to suspension parts on 1st gens.

In truth, a single wheel should still work fine, there's a lug nut out there that'll allow you to use your stock 3/4 ton wheel with the bigger axle studs and the wheel doesn't stick out beyond the bedside.

I don't believe the 3/4 ton hubs/backing plates will work on the 1 ton axle, due to bearing sizes.

Mark.

Yep, should work fine to swap the entire axle. I ran a dually rear under my srw for a while and i liked the look of it much better. got the tires out to the edge of the bed instead of being tucked way in.

As far as hubs... yes, you will have to either switch studs or get new nuts. The drw and srw use the same wheel bearings, but the spacing on the hub is different. Even if you could use the srw hub, it would make the wheels stick out another 1" on each side.

The chevy rears are a little different. you can swap hubs and backing plates like i did when i put a 14 bolt under my dodge.
