Suspension help needed

Ok guys I need some input from anybody that had rebuilt their front suspension.
Here is what is happening, I am finally going to rebuild the front suspension or more accurately I will do some of it and then have Bear Wheel and Frame do the rest of it since it is going to need an alignment.

Here are my plans:
A) Replace the upper and lower control arm bushings,
B) Replace the upper and lower ball Joints.

C) Replace the front brake pads.
D) Maybe replace the rotors.

The last time I was lying under my truck I noticed that my upper and lower rubber snubbers have been making contact with the control arms,

Also I noticed that when I take a bump that it feels like my front suspension bottoms out a bit too easy.

So I was thinking that before I take it in for work, I will replace the front springs first, I had installed this current pair of coils about 10 years ago.
My thinking is that maybe the rate has decreased although the height seems to be where I had left it.

Now here is where I need the help, I checked with my local Dodge dealer for the springs and of course they have been out of stock for about 8 years now but he did give a lot of information.

According to my VIN number, my truck has the "SKB" spring code.
SKB code =1725/1915 lb "SKB"
SKG code =1825/2000 lb "SKG" I DO NOT have.

What it Pad/Ground capacity and how does it relate to Spring Rate? (see description for OEM springs)

Now looking at the MOOG application for my truck,
#5716 is 1429 lbs Heavy Duty Service
#5716S 1430 lbs Severe Duty

See my dilemma, which replacement spring is equivalent to my OEM heavy duty spring?

I will get the fender to ground measurements later for a comparison.

Have anyone ever bought springs from Rock Auto?

Thanks for the help.
Jim.

Call ATS(autotrucksprings), I'm sure they can make the spring that fits your truck.

Sorry man, mine has leaf springs in the front. If it helps any: my cousin is a mechanic and he tells me that his shop has the least amount of bring backs/warranty issues with factory dealership parts and Moog parts in that order. He told me that his shop tries to use Moog stuff when available because it causes them less problems in the long run. On the other end of the spectrum: when they HAVE to use Cardone parts they order 3 units, hope one works, return the rest.

Jim I replaced mine about 8 yrs ago and they are still not sagging. I used the severe duty springs you have listed.
Good Luck.

Need to bump this back from the dead,

Can anyone help me with this information, I need to have my front suspension repaired soon and I need which springs you might have used.

Or if anyone works at a dealer and knows the definition of "Pad/Ground capacity" and how does it relate to Spring Rate? (see description for OEM springs)

Thanks Jim

Since you're the kind of Jim Lane guy we all love, why not replace the front coils with air bags ?

Of all people on this site, I know that's something you could easily handle....

Could you imagine the ride quality ???? Other than this, I have leaf springs as well, so I'm useless...

Jim Hi

I can't answer your questions related to pad/ground capacity.

It is my understanding that the aftermarket aka Moog only offers two different styles of springs and that the "S" variants are their own devised contraption not based on any factory/OEM spec but rather based off of a chevy coil. (Also notice how the "S" model has no OEM PN cross reference)

My understanding is to go with the non-S. I installed and fully rebuilt McKnittle's old 2wd arms and chose to do so with the Daystar coil Spring Spacers with 7226 and it has turned out great and rides very smooth.

If you haven't already, this is an enlightening read from Mysteryman https://www.turbodieselregister.com/threads/240087-93-2WD-Any-way-to-raise-the-front-end-up

Here is a quick excerpt. BTW I'm not sure I understand the difference between the 7226 and 5716 Parts. Terry says use 7226 only.

"2) Coil springs. This is very important !!! DO NOT BELIEVE WHAT THE PARTS CATALOGS LIST . All of the aftermarket suspension manufactures catalogs have listings for "super heavy duty springs" Do NOT BUY THEM ! THEY WILL DESTROY YOUR FRONT END!!! GMC/Chevy coil springs have a near exact diameter a ours do. They will fit but the spring rate is way too high ! They will crush your upper control arm bushing out in a a few short months. They will also cause the control arms to bend ! All those heavy duty / super heavy duty springs they list are actually Chevy springs. The springs that came with our trucks rarely sag vary much. The problem is what I mentioned above. It is the problem 99% of the time. But If you feel that you just have to replace them. THE CORRECT AND ONLY PART # TO USE IS MOOG # 7226

They are slightly longer than the originals so you do not have to use the upper rubber cushions. I do recommend globbing some WATER PROOF GREASE ON THE TOP OF THE SPRING WHERE IT MEETS THE FRAME. iF YOU DO NOT IT MAY SQUEAK AND CREAK A BIT. I also highly recommend to only buy Moog suspension parts ! they are about the only quality part left out there. Our front ends need all the help they can get !!!!!!!!!!!!!! "

Terry embarked on this project, not sure where it ended up.

I used the 5716 in my truck, it raised the front end about 2 inches. The truck sits level now. I have no complaints with them after more than 2 years with them. Although I bought many of the front end parts from Rock Auto I got the springs from Jegs. The only complaint I have is that I am not able to keep outer tie rod end boots on the truck. Seems they are ripped, torn or gone within a few weeks. Maybe this is due to the increased angle since the front end sits higher, I don't know.

I will say this though. I was not really impressed with the Moog parts. The top of the line NAPA parts are better quality but expensive.

Anyone know the stock ride height on a D-350 Dually?
Is this in the service manual?

For the front ride height, should the control arms be in the center of travel?

Can someone measure their distance from the bump stop to the control arm,

I know I have hit my bump stop hard a few times crossing an Intersection, I want to see how much mine have sagged if any.

Jim

I don't recall ever seeing front end height specs for the trucks. It would vary depending on the tires used. I do recall a TSB that addressed the truck sitting lower on the left side. In that TSB they only instructed to measure the fender height at the center of the wheel opening and that if it was within an inch it was ok. I think they had a spacer to add to the left side spring if it was off.
