Stupid ? I'm sure

This maybe a stupid question. This is the first diesel I've been around so I'm not sure what to expect. When I turn the truck off the motor and transmission shakes pretty hard, is that normal?

The Cummins has a pretty hard kick just as it's stopping, that's normal.

It's a result of high compression ratios and heavy reciprocating assembly.
Check your motor mounts though...

Just don't forget to let that turbo cool off some before you shut it down!

Yeah thats what mine is doing. It hits floor pan and has cut the boot. As long as its normal its funny to me. I thought they did that when they shut off.

JimmieD how long does it take to cool down enough to shut it down?

Just make sure its under 400* if you have a pyro. Somewhere around 300* is good. If you dont have a pyro then just let it idle for a half a minute or so. The main concern with this is after pulling a trailer or something, the turbo stays hot for awhile and if you shut the truck off, then the oil inside the turbo will get cooked.

I have to say I like the shake and sudden stop...when I am the one controlling it. I would worry more if it shaked violently and stopped with out turning the key to off. I like the belt squeak someone else mentioned earlier too.

Actually I let mine cool down longer than that, especially if I've been running it a little hard. I go for a full minute no matter what, and up to 2 or 3 if I just came in off a hard run. The oil has to circulate through the turbo to cool down the bearing cassette etc. or else it can coke up and eat the bearing, shaft and housing. Not a sudden disaster but it doesn't take long to hurt it either. It's fun to sit there and listen to it anyway, just before it shakes like a horse when you take the saddle off at shutdown.....
