steering stabilizer for our trucks?
steering stabilizer for our trucks?
I've been thinkin about gettin a steering stabilizer for my truc, it does dart at every hole, rut or pebble I hit, especially in 4 wheel. And my steering is pretty loose (need new steering box and borgeson shaft) but I'm sure this would help my sloppy steering a bit and keep my truck goin a little straighter. I found some in JCwhitney and they had a rough country dual steering stabilizer kit in their catalog for our trucks I thought, but online it says they don't have them for our trucks, but they do for the ramchargers? The kit was around $90, but I believe they had a single kit for our trucks. I want to get a dual kit, plus I have a hair bigger tires, Just wonderin the best brand or place to get one and how well they work, thanks.
JC Whitney set
I have that JC Whitney set...been on their for roughly 2 years. Put that same brand on my 2002 Ford PSD. Nice fit up, and definately helped with the bump steer. But, I must warn you. Like yourself, I sought out to patch fix a problem, instead of correctly fixing the right part. Just recently I swapped out my end links, drag link for new. I did the Borgeson shaft years ago and added the brace plate bracket that stiffens the gear box to frame. My steering has tightened up a bit, especially with the recent end link/drag link replacements. With the Borgeson shaft it helped only a little. My ear box is next, I feel.
I've had a rancho single setup on one of my trucks, and a skyjacker dual setup on my current truck. The skyjacker dual kit is nice with heavy duty brackets. Like was previously posted, its a band aid fix. My truck steers like a dream now with a combination of the borgeson shaft, crossover steering, and the moper steering box brace.
Start your truck up and have someone turn your steering wheel back and forth and watch your steering box, if it is flexing you may want to try a box brace first, i have a duel rancho and mine still darts around, and last night while i was waiting on the slowest pump in the world to fill up i had my wife turn my wheel.......

, i was almost afraid to drive it home after i saw how much it flexed, sooooo i know what i'm gona do this weekend.

May I suggest checking out the front end for loose parts before applying the steering stabilizer patch??
My truck had one on it when i got it. .. . . . and a bad case of death wobble. After i fixed all the loose parts in the front end & replaced the Uniroyal rubber it no longer death wobbled, had loose steering or needed the stabilizer which now resides on a shelf in my garage.

does anyone know if the rough country kit from JCwhitney for the ramcharger will fit our trucks? or is it different. Its weid that in there catalog it shows the dual kit fot 60-93 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton trucks and on their site it says for ramcharger. I think I may call them and see.

Alright cool, I think I'll get the rough country kit, seems to be the cheapest dual kit I could find. I'll be getting a borgeson shaft and a new box when the fundsa allow, and my steering isn't horrible, its just not as tight as I'd like it to be. And the steering box adjustment only lasted about a week.
My steering box is leaking on the input seal but I just keep adding ATF every so often and its gettin me by. I need to change my front U joints sometime too, I'm sure they are dry and worn out, 125,000+ miles on locked hubs wasnt good, but I'm surprised they held up. When I got this truck from my grandpa and noticed the hubs were locked and asked him if he messed with them and he said he never knew it had hubs
But got new tie rod ends and king pin bushings and wheels feel tight.

I put a used Rancho or Rough Country dual setup on mine off a 1/2 ton gasser. Its the dual setup that kicks each stabilizer shock out to each end of the tie rod not the stacked dual setup.

I have been debating on doing this. My buddy just got a borgeson shaft and box for his 92 and he acted not that impressed with it and lookin at the borgeson shaft, it didn't look that strong for the price but maybe that was just me. I could probably build one pretty easy. Thanks for the help.
